Tom Russell and Gretchen Peters play the Hank
What: A local concert from the renowned musicians
Where: The Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.
When: Sat., Sept. 19. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

The man Rolling Stone called the “best living songwriter” returns to the local stage this week. Legendary performer Tom Russell plays the Henry Strater Theatre this Saturday. Russell will be joined by Gretchen Peters, Sourdough Slim, Wylie Gustafson and Paul Zarsyski for the Roots on the Rails concert.

Russell has more than 20 albums of originals to his credit, as well as three books and one DVD. His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Doug Sahm, Dave Alvin, Joe Ely and others. One of his best known tunes is “Gallo del Cielo.”

The Village Voice proclaimed, “Tom Russell is worth at least a dozen Toby Keiths.” As evidence, Russell released “Hotwalker” in 2004, a montage of the Beat Generation featuring the voices of Jack Kerouac, Lenny Bruce, Dave Van Ronk and others. The album made more than a dozen top 10 “best-of” lists and served as a soundtrack for the published letters between Charles Bukowski and Russell. “’Hotwalker’ is a sensory and ideological barrage, yet Russell’s songwriting maintains an uncanny sense of place that advertises him as one of the remaining guardians of a dwindling narrative sensibility,” wrote the Associated Press. “This is an ambitious album that ultimately manages to become something quite rare: a work of art.”

Saturday’s show will offer an all-star line-up. Gretchen Peters is a highly respected, award-winning singer-songwriter and was named Folkwax Artist of the Year in 2008. Sourdough Slim, Wylie Gustafson and Paul Zarsyski will round out the show. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. For information, visit www.henrystratertheatre.com or call 375-7160.

Animas River clean-up returns on Saturday
What: The Five Rivers Chapter of Trout Unlimited’s annual service project to clean up the Animis River
Where: The Animas River, meeting at Santa Rita Park
When: Sat., Sept. 19, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Durangoans can give something back to the Animas River this Saturday. In conjunction with the annual Statewide River Cleanup, the Five Rivers Chapter of TU, the City of Durango and community volunteers will be removing trash from the banks of the Animas River.

Trout Unlimited is hoping to attract dozens of volunteers to the Animas this weekend for a large-scale, coordinated effort. Colorado Trout Unlimited schedules the Statewide River Clean-up for the fall because river flows are generally lower, making access to the rivers and clean-up efforts easier. “People should be saying, ‘The Animas is our river, and we’re going to grab the kids and go down and help,’” said Ty Churchwell, president of the local TU chapter. “We’d love to see a bigger turnout this year, and the river sure could use the help.

The Animas River Clean-up will take place this Sat., Sept. 19, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Volunteers should meet at Santa Rita Park. Snacks, refreshments, trash bags and rubber gloves will be provided. For more information, contact 382-8248.
