Casper and the Mighty 602 play two area shows
What: A pair of concerts from the Hopi/Navajo reggae band
Where: The Mancos Opera House and the Summit
When: May 23 at 7 p.m. and May 24 at 8:30 p.m.

Indigenous reggae sweeps through the region the weekend. Casper & the Mighty 602, a Navajo/Hopi roots reggae band, plays shows in Mancos and Durango on May 23 & 24.

Casper Lomayesva is a Hopi/Diné singer who has created a sound that combines his native roots with reggae music. Casper’s words are a reflection of his philosophy of life, influenced not only by the sounds of reggae music but of traditional Hopi culture. Casper and his band, the Mighty 602, have played their share of big stages. The band performed at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration Ball and has shared the stage with Michal Franti, Burning Spear, Damian Marley, Dave Mathews, Primus, Carlos Santana and others.

Casper will perform on Sat., May 23, as part of the Mesa Verde Country Indian Arts and Culture Festival. Concert time is at 7 p.m. at the Mancos Opera House. The arts and culture festival runs from May 22-31 and includes a juried Indian art market, Indian dances, Navajo rug auction, special archaeological tours and exhibits, outdoor theater, and more. Bare Bone Burlesque to play Arts Center

Burlesque goes into the spotlight next week in Durango. The Bare Bones Burlesque & The Salt Fire Circus kick off a four-evening run on May 27 at the Durango Arts Center. Doors open each night at 7:30 p.m.

The Bare Bones Burlesque & The Salt Fire Circus will present four shows of music and dance in the styles of alternative circus and burlesque performance. The troupe is a grassroots, community-wide art project, and the performance draws on the talent of dancers, singers, musicians, and artists from the Durango community. Partial proceeds from the shows benefit the Sexual Assault Services Organization, which provides support to survivors in La Plata, Archuleta and Montezuma counties.

Iron Horse presents community street party
What: The IHBC’s 3rd annual community concert, featuring Shawn Mullins
Where: The corner of 8th St. and Main Ave.
When: Sun., May 24, at 6: 30 p.m.

The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is rolling out a free community concert along with a weekend packed with bicycle racing. Noted singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins returns to Durango this weekend to play a May 24 street party.

The show is the third annual concert for the Iron Horse, and organizers chose the downtown venue to round out the weekend-long roster of events. Mullins played the Iron Horse two years ago and returns this Sunday on the heels of his new album, “Honeydew.” The artist known for his folk and instrumental rock topped the charts in 1998 with “Lullaby” and has been nominated for a Grammy. His new album is a gritty exploration of humanity and place.

In addition to Mullins’ performance, there will be a multimedia show featuring images of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic past and present as well as film clips and photos from Saturday’s ride to Silverton.

While the show is free to the public, there is a charitable side to the event. All proceeds from beer sales and requested donations at the door are going to the Mercy Regional Breast Care Center. Attendees who make a donation at the door will be entered into a prize drawing that includes a new bike, a jersey autographed by Lance Armstrong and many more items.
