Sweet Sunny South returns to the Hank
What: A show from the old-time string band
Where: The Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.
When: Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m.

Old-time strings go on stage in Durango this Saturday. Local favorite Sweet Sunny South returns on May 16 for an 8 p.m. show at the Henry Strater Theatre.

The Paonia-based Sweet Sunny South is an old-timey quartet that has performed extensively throughout the region for the past eight years. Beyond selling out dozens of shows, the band has placed in the prestigious RockyGrass band contest two years running. Banjo and mandolin player Bill Powers writes most of the band’s original songs; Cory Obert plays old-time fiddle and sings high tenor; Rob Miller on rhythm guitar sings lead and harmony; and Shelley Gray plays bass and sings. The foursome appears on stage in authentic old-fashioned dress and plays around a single standing microphone in the style of old.

Audiences can expect a highly entertaining stage show featuring rollicking fiddle tunes, soulful ballads, tight vocal harmonies and an exceptional array of original songs combined with a heavy dose of humor.

Doors to the show open at 7:30 p.m., and more information is available at www.henrystratertheatre.com.
