The Summit presents Idaho’s Finn Riggins
What: A show from the noted jam band
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Thurs., Dec. 10, at 9:30 p.m.

“One of America’s hardest working bands” plays the local stage this week. Idaho’s Finn Riggins plays the Summit on Dec. 10. One of La Plata County’s hardest working bands, The Freeman Social, opens the show.

Finn Riggins is the result of a longtime collaboration between Cameron Bouiss, Eric Gilbert and Lisa Simpson. The three met while completing their music degrees at the University of Idaho and started playing together in 2000. In August of 2006, Bouiss, Gilbert and Simpson quit their jobs, moved to Sun Valley and formed Finn Riggins. Practices yielded shows, shows yielded tours and Finn Riggins evolved into a national touring act spending more time on the road than at home.

In 2008, Finn Riggins played more than 200 shows in 35 states, including appearances at festivals like the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, and Music Fest Northwest in Portland.

Their visit to Durango this week finds them fresh off a tour opening for indie heroes Built to Spill and promoting their new album, “Vs Wilderness.” The Thursday show begins at 9:30 p.m. For more information, call 247-2324.

‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ plays the Smiley Theatre stage

Where: The Smiley Theatre, 1309 E. Third Ave.

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” goes on stage in Durango this week. The Durango Lively Arts Co. will perform the Christmas classic Dec. 11-12 & 18-19.

In the play, the Herdmans are absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie and steal and smoke cigars (even the girls). They talk dirty, hit little kids, cuss out their teachers, and take the name of the Lord in vain. So no one is prepared when the Herdmans invade church one Sunday and decide to take over the annual Christmas pageant.

The cast for the local production is made entirely of local talent, and nearly all of the actors are under the age of 16. Durango Lively Arts produced its first show in 1982, and the company’s mission has been to provide opportunities for artists to participate in quality theater productions.

Tickets are available at the door or can be bought online at www.Durangotheater.org. Children under 2 are free.
