The Hank presents Chris and Thomas
What: A show from the acclaimed indie-folk duo
Where: The Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.
When: Fri., Aug. 21. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Indie/folk goes into the spotlight at the Henry Strater Theatre this week. Chris and Thomas, a rising musical duo, play the local stage Aug. 21.

Chris and Thomas became close friends at the historic art school in Liverpool where John Lennon and Paul McCartney had met up decades before. By the late ’90s the two had created “Cook Au Van,” a traveling cooking show, eventually deciding to turn back to their true love of music.

Chris and Thomas’ music could be classified as Americana but includes sounds gathered from the landscapes of the American Southwest. The pair arrived in Los Angeles in 2003 and made their live debut shortly after. The two released their record, “Land of the Sea,” in 2006 and it rapidly garnered critical acclaim and rave reviews. “Take These Thoughts” went on that year to win Best Song of the Year in the Americana category at the Independent Music Awards

Chris and Thomas take the stage at the Hank at 8 p.m. this Friday. For more information, visit www.henrystratertheatre.com.

Durango Acoustic Music presents The Derailers
What: An all-ages show from the honky-tonk legends
Where: Durango Arts Center, 802 E. Second Ave.
When: Sat., Aug. 22. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

The Bakersfield sound swaggers into Durango this Saturday as The Derailers make their first-local appearance at the Durango Arts Center. The all-ages show is a program of Durango Acoustic Music.

Based out of Austin, Texas, The Derailers have steadily been satisfying audiences with its tried-and-true blend of honky-tonk, rockabilly and good ol’ Texas-flavored rock ‘n’ roll over the last 15 years. Their music celebrates the legacies of Buck Owens, George Jones, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Charlie Rich with a little Beatles and Buddy Holly thrown in.

Though much of their music could be called throwback songs, that doesn’t mean they’re cheap imitations. In fact, The Derailers’ appeal lies in their ability to meld their influences – and pay homage to their heroes – without merely aping those artists’ sounds.

The quintet is made up of Brian Holfeldt, lead vocals/guitar; Chris Schlotzhauer, pedal steel, Dobro and vocals; Sweet Basil McJagger on keyboards; Scott Matthews on drums and percussion; and newcomer Kevin Smith on electric and acoustic bass and vocals.

The group is on the road to promote their ninth album, “Guaranteed to Satisfy,” which was self-produced by frontman Holfeldt. “It’s sort of like doing surgery on yourself,” jokes Holfeldt, who describes the album as a mix of two-step tunes and hold-your-sweetheart-close ballads.

Rockandrollreport.com called The Derailers “one of the tightest bands in all of country music, and definitely one of the most talented” and National Public Radio calls their sound “hangdog honky-tonk at its best”

Doors to the show open at 7:30 p.m. with music starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or in advance at Southwest Sound, Animas Trading Co.y and Canyon Music in Durango. Call 764-7596 for more info.

Suzanne Vega plays the Concert Hall
What: A local show from the acclaimed singer-songwriter
Where: The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
When: Sat., Aug. 22, at 7: 30 p.m.

“Luka” is paying Durango’s biggest stages a visit this week. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega plays the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College this Saturday. Doors to the show open at 7 p.m.

Vega is revered as a rare poetic genius and one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation. Her profound insight into the basics of human existence, exemplified in her hits “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner,” has earned her followers of all ages and walks of life.

A Boston Globe review noted, “If you haven’t seen her recently, or maybe if your knowledge of her music stalled with ‘Tom’s Diner,’ experiencing Vega live was either a revelation or a reminder of how engrossing she can be.”

Vega’s neo-folk style ushered in a new female, acoustic, folk-pop singer-songwriter movement that has included Tracy Chapman, Shawn Colvin and Indigo Girls. By 1997 she had joined Sarah McLachlan on her Lilith Fair tour, celebrating the female voice in pop and rock. With her most recent release “Beauty & Crime” (2007), Vega uses her beloved New York City as the backdrop for the collection of 11 new songs.

Tickets for the show are available at www.durangoconcerts.com, by calling 247-7657or by visiting the downtown ticketing office.
