George Winston returns to Arts Center
What: A local concert by solo pianist George Winston
Where: The Durango Arts Center, 802 E. Second Ave.
When: Mon., Aug. 17, 7:30 p.m.

A local favorite and music legend returns to Durango this week. Solo pianist George Winston plays the Durango Arts Center on Aug. 17.

Winston is best known for his seasonally themed recordings including “Autumn,” “December,” “Winter Into Spring” and “Summer.” He is currently putting the finishing touches on a new solo piano album, “Love Will Come: The Music of Vince Guaraldi Vol 2,” tentatively set for a fall or winter release.

Winston has performed more than 3,000 shows, which include renditions of his most beloved solo piano works in three styles: melodic folk piano, New Orleans R&B piano, and stride piano. Since 1986, Winston has worked with a local food bank in every tour market to hold a canned food drive at the show. In addition to the drive, partial proceeds from the Aug. 17 show will benefit the Durango Food Bank.

George Winston goes on next Monday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Durango Arts Center at 259-2606.

The Red House Gallery hosts ‘Painting Postpartum’
What: A one-night show from local artist Tirzah Camacho
Where: The Red House Gallery, 118 W. Mill St. in Bayfield
When: Sat., Aug. 15, 6-9 p.m.

Postnatal paint goes on display in Bayfield this week. The Red House Gallery will host “Painting Postpartum,” new work from Tirzah Camacho, this Saturday. The one-night exhibit will show from 6-9 p.m.

Tirzah Camacho has been printmaking for more than a decade, but a recent life change has caused a shift in her work. Camacho had a baby, which is just part of the reason she is focusing on painting over printmaking these days. Her printmaking roots, though, can still be seen in her work. “I feel like I’m printmaking with a paint brush,” explains Camacho.

She says she draws her paintings first and works in layers, and that each of her paintings ends up telling a story. “I like narratives,” she says. “I think I work better in narratives.”

The stories behind Camacho’s new works are very telling. From bugs (a symbol of the poverty she grew up in) to fallopian tubes (a comment on her own recent life adventure), her work is filled with emotion, humor, beauty and thought.

For more information on the show, visit www.theredhousegallery.com.

HD Mountains field trip set for Saturday
What: A volunteer naturalist training and tour of the threatened area
Where: The HD Mountains, near Bayfield
When: Sat., Aug. 15, from 8-11 a.m.

The HD Mountains go public again this weekend. Colorado Wild, the Western Environmental Law Center and San Juan Citizens Alliance are hosting an Aug. 15 field trip to the nearby roadless area. The hope is to train volunteer naturalists in order to keep tabs on the threatened area for years to come.

The effort is being undertaken in conjunction with Patagonia’s Freedom to Roam program. The goal of the trip is to monitor and bring attention to wildlife connectivity issues in and around the HD Mountains. Located near Bayfield, the HDs are a haven for wildlife but face increasing threats from oil and gas development. The Saturday field trip will include a relatively short hike that will enable participants to visualize the wildlife corridor. The hope is that over time, the HDs can develop into a model for wildlife migration.

Saturday’s trip gets under way at 8 a.m., and the trip will run through 11 a.m. For more information, call Colorado Wild at 385-9833 or email paul@coloradowild.org.
