Durango goes big for Earth Day
What: The local celebration of the national observance

Durango’s environmental accomplishments and efforts go into the spotlight next week for Earth Day. The April 22 celebration will feature exhibits and educational activities, giveaways, a film series and community presentations, all at the Durango Public Library.

Earth Day festivities get under way at 1 p.m. with presentations on the Climate and Energy Action Plan; climate and energy accomplishments by local governments; and the Fort Lewis College Environmental Center accomplishments. At 2 p.m., the event will turn to Samso, Denmark, the first island in the industrialized world to achieve energy independence. The Durango Discovery Museum’s Powerhouse Kids will be showcased at 3 p.m., and a screening of “Story of Stuff” begins at 3:30 p.m. The schedule will repeat itself beginning at 4 p.m.

Organizers are hoping that Earth Day 2009 will offer a veritable one-stop shop for Durangoans to learn what is happening locally and how they can take part. For more information, visit www.fourcore.org.

Smiley Theatre hosts green film festival
What: Rocky Mountain Green Films, a free film festival

A “clean and healthy theater experience” lands at the Smiley Theatre this week. Rocky Mountain Green Films will present a series of compelling, entertaining and educational green films on April 17 & 18.

The event is a 100 percent solar-powered green festival, which features nine feature films. Among the offerings will be a premiere of “Return of the Honeybee,” “Green,” “Oil and Water,” “Addicted to Plastic” and many others. Admission is free and there will be organic snacks, prizes and special guest speakers. Donations will benefit a variety of green organizations, including a local group that is traveling to Africa to complete a variety of service projects.
