Coffee Festival returns to Main Avenue
What: The fourth annual Durango Coffee Festival

Downtown Durango is going to the beans this Saturday. Coffee connoisseurs and casual consumers are invited to take part in the fourth annual Durango Coffee Festival on Sept. 6.

Local vendors will offer numerous specialty drinks, regular drip coffee, coffee cocktail drinks, and coffee-inspired foods. In addition to drinks, each vendor Entertainment will be provided by Formula 151, the Gigi Love Duo, Out to Lunch Again, and the Still Water Drum Band. A high-fashion clothing and accessories competition using recycled coffee bean sacks and other coffee-related materials will be open to public jury during the event.  Children’s activities will also be available along with a Speed Scrabble competition. In addition, a live auction will take place at noon to auction off 50-yard-line Broncos tickets, lunch and soak at Dunton Hot Springs, a private regional ruins tour, Telluride ski tickets and will provide educational information about the socio-economic impact of the coffee industry in a specific coffee-growing region.

The festival takes place this Saturday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on 8th Street between Main Avenue and the railroad tracks. Tour de Farms takes off Saturday
What: The second annual Tour de Farms Durango Bike Tour
Where: Beginning at the Durango Farmers Market!

Durango celebrates local food and active living this Saturday at the second annual Tour de Farms Durango Bike Tour takes off. Sponsored by Healthy Lifestyle La Plata Coalition, the educational bike tour highlights what is unique, healthy and homegrown about our Durango community.

This year’s Tour de Farms offers two routes – a leisurely 5-mile, in-town tour and a 35-mile long loop to Hesperus. All participants will tour the Durango Farmers’ Market and visit cutting-edge examples of sustainable agricultural projects. The Tour will feature presentations from farmers and garden directors and share ways you can support area efforts to strengthen the local food system.

On both tours, riders will sample delicious, locally grown products and learn about urban and rural farming and gardening; eating seasonally; preserving fresh foods; and how to actively support local food and agricultural efforts. At the finish there will be live music and a seasonal lunch featuring Sunnyside Meat’s BBQ, beer and root beer from Carvers, and salads from Turtle Lake Refuge.

FLCLife-Long Learning kicks off fall series
What: Fort Lewis College’s Life-Long Learning lecture series
Where: 130 Noble Hall, the Center of Southwest Studies, Roshong Recital Hall
When: Thursdays at 7 p.m. beginning on Sept. 4

Fort Lewis College is once again opening its doors to the community this fall. Life-Long Learning, a lecture series sponsored by the Professional Associates of FLC, resumes this week and runs through Nov. 20.

The programs include both individual speakers and panels exploring a wide variety of subjects. The talks often feature slide or PowerPoint presentations and are always followed by opportunities for open discussion and public Q&A.

The lecture series kicks off this Thursday at 7 p.m. with a talk by Thomas Wolf. In “Endangered Species Sighted! Republican Environmentalist, Subspecies Christian,” Wolf will discuss Arthur Carhart, a neglected Colorado history giant. Wolf’s new book, Arthur Carhartt: Wilderness Prophet, follows the life of the major thinker, writer and activist.

The free lecture series will continue every Thursday throughout the fall. On Sept. 11, the series founder, Judith Reynolds, will present “Remembrance and Honor: Memorial Art on the 7th Anniversary of 9/11.” Reynolds will explore various examples of memorial art and architecture in the context of the ongoing effort to honor the dead of Sept. 11, 2001.

Other coming lectures include, “The History of the Violin,” “Ancient Wisdom: The Psychology of Eastern Religion,” “Poetry Alive and Aloud at FLC,” as well as many more tackling a variety of subjects.
