Maria’s Bookshop celebrates PeaceJam
What: A presentation by the nine local students who attended the recent conference

Maria’s Bookshop is celebrating student activism and optimism next week. The Nov. 17 event will focus on PeaceJam and the nine local students who attended the recent conference.

During the celebration, local participants will share their experiences from the PeaceJam Global Call to Action Conference, held in Los Angeles this fall. More than 2000 youth leaders from around the world met with seven Nobel Peace Laureates to discuss the state of the world and strategize solutions for global problems.

Colorado-based PeaceJam was founded in 1996 to develop young leaders to work for nonviolent change through the advice and inspiration of Nobel Peace Prize laureates. In the last decade, PeaceJam has mobilized 600,000 youths around the world to develop more than 1 million service projects.

‘Make Music Happen’ lands at DAC
What: The Stillwater Foundation’s first music program concert
Where: The Durango Arts Center, 802 E. Second Ave.
When: Sun., Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.  

A community concert goes on stage at the Durango Arts Center this Sunday. The Stillwater Foundation present its first music program concert, “Make Music Happen,” at 5 p.m. on Nov. 16.

The concert will feature Stillwater’s six bands comprised of students ages seven through adult. The bands play original and familiar jazz, rock, Latin, and blues compositions. Some of the tunes on tap for the show include “Oye Como Va,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Sympathy for the Devil” and “Canteloupe Island” among many others.  

Stillwater band members meet for rehearsals twice a week after school and in the evenings. Scholarships are made available to those who cannot afford the program’s tuition.
