What: A benefit concert/dinner for the La Plata County Humane Society

Durangoans can party for the sake of pets this weekend. The La Plata County Humane Society is holding its inaugural Bark & Wine Boogie Ball on Sat., Nov. 8, at the D&SNG Railroad Museum.

The festive event caps off National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. The week runs through Nov. 8 and is a national campaign to raise awareness and appreciation for the important role animal shelters play in society. Attendees at the Bark & Wine Boogie Ball will enjoy a gourmet meal created and catered by local chefs, dancing to live rock from the Jelly Belly Boogie Band, and participating in a live auction of unique items. Allison Ragsdale Photography will also be on hand, taking professional portraits.

Hunger Banquet lands at Fort Lewis College
What: The 3rd annual Oxfam America Hunger Banquet

Fort Lewis College is putting the spotlight on global hunger and poverty next week. The Student Programming Council is hosting its 3rd annual Oxfam America Hunger Banquet on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the College Union Building Ballroom.

Every day, hundreds of millions of people live in poverty and go hungry in the world, including millions right here in the United States. Tuesday’s event will give participants a taste of global realities and benefit an organization working to end them. Oxfam America is an international relief and development organization with the goal of finding solutions to the problems of poverty and hunger.

Founded in 1970, Oxfam works with local organizations to help people and address the root causes of poverty. Oxfam is committed to the tradition of community-based work, and recognizes that large barriers can keep people in poverty.

Habitat hosts 10th Wine Tasting Gala
What: Habitat for Humanity’s 10th Liquor World Wine Tasting Gala and Silent Auction

Durango is going bottoms up for affordable housing on Friday. Habitat for Humanity’s 10th annual Liquor World Wine Tasting Gala and Silent Auction is set for 5-8 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the DoubleTree Hotel. Proceeds will benefit Habitat’s current construction of two duplexes in Bayfield.

The Wine Tasting Gala will include more than 500 selected wines including sparkling wines and ports. A broad selection of hors d’oeuvres provided by local restaurants will complement the wines. Silent auction items include ski and train passes, art treasures and more. A popular item up for bid are the Habitat birdhouses, all embellished by local artists. Setting the backdrop for the evening will be the smooth Brazilian rhythms of Das Samba, a local duo featuring singer/songwriter Thom Rader on guitar/vocals, and Miguel Jose Guttman a premier Latin percussionist.
