Karma Train presents ‘Dance for Darfur’
What: A fund/awareness-raiser about violence in Darfur
Where: The Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave.
When: Thurs., May 22, 5-10:30 p.m.

Durangoans can “Dance for Darfur” at the Carver Brewing Co. this week. The May 22 event is a dance party to aid displaced families in the Sudan. Entry is free, but donations are encouraged and portion of beer sales go directly to C.A.R.E., which uses 91 percent of funds for direct resources in Darfur.

Music for the event has been donated by Durango and Mancos locals, and D.J. I-Gene, Carute Roma, Sound Advice, Back Porch Swing Band and Sea & the Rhythm are all set to perform. Karma Train, a group of local volunteers, is hosting the event with the goal of raising funds and awareness for the current crisis in Darfur.

Darfur, a region in Sudan, has been plagued by violence since 2003, when two rebel groups – the Sudanese Liberation Army and Justice & Equality Movement – attacked the Sudanese government over the alleged oppression of non-Arabs. Since the attack, more than 400,000 people have been killed, and an estimated 2 million families have been displaced.

Several international organizations are attempting to aid the displaced people, but they get little support from the Sudanese government. One of these organizations is C.A.R.E., which has been stationed in Africa for more than two decades and active in Darfur since 2004.  C.A.R.E. focuses on providing supplies to the war-affected people of Darfur.

“Dance for Darfur” runs from 5-10:30 p.m. this Thursday. For more information, call 259-2545.

Downtown Durango ‘spruces up’ for spring
What: The 5th annual “Clean Day” and 700 block of Main art installation
Where: Downtown Durango
When: May 22 & 23

In a joint effort to prepare Durango’s Historic Downtown for the upcoming summer tourism season and put the town’s “best face forward,” the community is banding together this week with “Spring Spruce Up” events set for May 22 & 23.

On May 22, an original collage/mural will be installed on the wooden façade covering the construction area in the 700 block of Main Ave. Twelve local artists, brought together by the Durango Arts Center, have volunteered their time and talents to paint the summer streetscape/collage, with all materials – including 40 4-foot-by-4-foot panels – donated by the Durango Business District (BID).

“The fire of Feb. 22 in the 700 block scarred the Downtown, but the reconstruction has begun, and we want to celebrate,” said Jasper Welch, BID coordinator. “The collage is being painted to include ‘peep holes’ through the wood so pedestrians can watch the Phoenix rise from the literal ashes.”

The 5th annual “Clean Day,” or newly christened “Downtown Clean Around” is set for May 23, with dozens of local citizens scheduled to literally polish the Downtown. The Clean Around is sponsored by the Durango Chamber of Commerce, City of Durango and the BID, and volunteers are asked to meet in the parking lot of the Strater Hotel at 8:45 a.m. for their “assignments,” to enjoy complimentary coffee and doughnuts, and then “get ‘er done.”

Volunteers are asked to sign-up by calling 247-0312.

Iron Horse presents free community concert
What: The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic’s 2nd annual community party
Where: Buckley Park, located at 12th St. and Main
When: Sat., May 24 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic will be rolling out a weekend of downtown entertainment in addition to bicycle racing. Local favorite Formula 151 performs this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. for a Main Avenue concert at Buckley Park. The Historic Downtown District, The Wells Group, Alpine Bank and Colorado Land Title Co. are sponsoring the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic’s latest community offering.

The show is the second concert for the Iron Horse, which chose the downtown venue to round out its weekend-long roster of events. Formula 151, an original Durango rock pop band, will be the evening’s featured performer. There will also be a multimedia show of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic past and present as well as film clips and photos from the day’s ride to Silverton. The IHBC is posting cameras on course to capture candid shots of participants.

While the show is free to the public, there is a charitable side to the event. All proceeds from beer sales (provided by the Carver Brewing Co.) and requested donations at the door are going to the Mercy Foundation. The monies will help fund the construction of their future Breast Care Diagnostic Center. Tickets will be given to attendees who make a donation at the door, which may then go into a prize drawing that includes a Trek Lime Bike, a Jamis Commuter Bike, autographed jerseys from Levi Leipheimer, Chris Wherry, Ned Overend and 2007 Tour de France Champion Alberto Contador, and more.
