The Fort Lewis College Art Gallery hosts Assistant Professor of
Art Chad Colby’s “Primarily Painting” exhibit
through March 20. In fall 2007, Colby’s work was recognized
by Fort Lewis College and was granted the title of featured

faculty who have distinguished themselves by their scholarly or
artistic contributions.

Community Concert Hall presents ‘Rapunzel’
What: A musical from the Seem-To-Be Players
Where: The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
When: Sunday, March 9 at 4 p.m.
Rapunzel is paying a visit to Durango’s biggest stage this
week. The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College hosts a
March 9 performance of “Rapunzel,” a musical adaptation
by Max Bush and Ric Averill of the classic Brother’s Grimm
Fairy Tale. The curtain rises at 4 p.m.
The play is being brought to the stage by the professional
children’s theater company, The Seem-To-Be Players, who seek
to expand the imagination, encourage creative thinking and promote
an appreciation of human values. Averill has been the artistic
director for The Seem-To-Be Players since he and his wife, Jeanne,
founded the company in 1973.
In the play, magical events come to life through comedy, song
and characterizations. This “coming of age” tale of the
girl child traded away and raised in an enchanted tower is told in
powerful images but with an appealing warmth and wit.
“Each season we book family entertainment, something truly
for the kids,” said Gary Penington, concert hall managing
director. “This is a wonderful theater company, very creative
and very professional”

Reggae pioneers play the Summit
What: A show from the Melodians, a Jamaican reggae trio
Where: The Summit, 600 Main Ave.
When: Thurs., March 6, at 9:30 p.m.
Reggae legends will take a Durango stage this week. The
Melodians, an early Jamaican rocksteady reggae trio, play the
Summit on Thursday, March 6, at 9:30 p.m.
The Melodians were formed in Kingston in 1963 by original
members Trevor McNaughton, Tony Brevett and Brent Gayford Dowe.
Renford Cogle acted as the group’s major songwriter in the
early days. The band was discovered at a Kingston singing contest
and made their recording debut shortly thereafter.
From 1967 to 1968 the Melodians had a number of hits on the
Treasure Isle label, including “You Have Caught Me” and
“Expo 67.” After recording “Swing and Dine”
for producer Sonia Pottinger, the band recorded its biggest hit,
“Rivers of Babylon.” The song became an anthem for the
Rastafarian movement and was featured on the soundtrack for the
movie, “The Harder They Come.”
In 1973, Brent Dowe left the group for a solo career, but the
band regrouped in the 1990s and is still touring. For more
