Folk great Patty Larkin takes on the Abbey
What: A Durango Acoustic Music and KDUR sponsored show
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Fri., July 11 at 9 p.m.

A critically acclaimed experimental folk musician takes the Durango stage this week, and she brings her distinctive sound and style along with her. Patty Larkin will celebrate the release of her 11th CD, “Watch the Sky” at the Abbey Theatre on July 11. The Durango Acoustic Music sponsored show is also a fund-raiser for KDUR Public Radio.

Known for combining acoustic instruments with modern technology, Larkin doesn’t fail to impress with “Sky,” which has proven to be her most ambitious album to date. Experimenting with instruments such as a “slapsteel” guitar (a lap steel detuned and played with a drumstick and hand), banjo, bazouki, loops and a toy organ, as well as acoustic and electric guitars, Larkin wrote and recorded much of the material as it came to her. Aside from playing every instrument on the album, she also wrote, produced, engineered and edited the entire album herself.

In the lead-up to “Watch the Sky,” Larkin has achieved critical success and won an unprecedented 11 Boston Music Awards. She has also joined a distinguished group including Duke Ellington, Sting and Natalie Cole and is a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Music degree from Berklee College of Music. In that time, Larkin has also honed a reputation as a “musician’s musician,” working with some of the brightest talents in American music.

Tickets for the show are available at Animas Trading Co., Southwest Sound, Canyon Music, and the Abbey Theatre. They can also be purchased by phone at 385-1711. For more information, visit www.durangoacousticmusic.com.

'Between the Tides' stops off in Durango
What: The debut screening of Nick Manning and Tyler Quintano's documentary, "Between the Tides"
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Fri., July 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Two of Durango's native sons are bringing climate change to the local silver screen this week. The Abbey Theatre will debut "Between the Tides," a documentary by Tyler Quintano and Nick Manning, on July 11 at 5:30 p.m. The Open Shutter Gallery opens an exhibit of Manning's photography on the same day.

"Between the Tides" takes a hard look at the human cost of climate change in the Ganges River Delta. Quintano and Manning became interested in the region spanning India and Bangladesh several years ago. The low-lying and impoverished coastal region is becoming one of the biggest casualties of global warming as the combination of rising sea levels and tidal surge from cyclones devastate whole cities and islands. In 2006, the first inhabited island of the Sundarban region, Lohachara, was submerged as a result of rising sea levels and global warming, and the 10,000 people who lived there became landless refugees. It is estimated that the refugee count could go as high as 5.5 million with as little as 45 centimeters in sea rise.

"Whole islands are disappearing with tens of thousands of people living on them," Quintano said. "We figured that documenting this tragedy would provide a useful perspective on global warming."

In conjunction with the debut, the Open Shutter Gallery is opening Manning's photographic exhibit, "This is us." The images were taken while filming "Between the Tides" and are an array of people and colors coexisting with a changing environment. An opening reception is scheduled for July 11 from 4-6 p.m.

For more information on the film and the work of Manning and Quintano visit www.sundarbanproject.org.
