As the clock ticked closer and closer to midnight on Monday evening, many people found themselves among friends and family ushering in the New Year with champagne and celebrations. Meanwhile, Anna and Elliott Garcia, of Ignacio, made the transition from 07 to 08 in the Family Birthing Center at Mercy Regional Medical Center, earning the distincition of having the first birth of the year in the county. Richard Paul Garcia entered the world at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, weighing in at 7 pounds, 5 ounces and measuring 18 inches from head to toe. Richard, no more than 12 hours into the world, posed for photographs on Tuesday afternoon, competely unaware of his unique beginnings.
