Art Chad Colby’s “Primarily Painting” exhibit

faculty who have distinguished themselves by their scholarly or
artistic contributions.

Dave Spencer returns to DMR
What: The 10th annual Dave Spencer Ski Classic, a fund-raiser for the Adaptive Sports Association

The Adaptive Sport’s Association’s signature
fund-raiser returns to the slopes this weekend. The
10th annual Dave Spencer Ski Classic takes place
on. 29-March 1 at the Columbine Area and Paradise Race Course at
Durango Mountain Resort. This event benefits the Adaptive Sports
Association, which provides sports and recreational programs for
people with disabilities.
The Adaptive Sports Association was founded in 1983 by Dave
Spencer, a young man who had lost a leg to cancer. Dave was a ski
instructor and visionary who believed that skiing could challenge
and increase the self-esteem of all individuals with disabilities.
Although Dave lost his battle with cancer in 1986, his dream of an
organization dedicated to teaching people with disabilities to ski
has continued to thrive and expand. As it happens, ASA’s
winter home at Durango Mountain Resort is called the Dave Spencer
Center.
The Dave Spencer Ski Classic is also a big part of keeping the
center’s doors open. Teams of five must raise a minimum of
$750 for the weekend event and then square off in ski races or the
“mountain rally,” a scavenger hunt and poker run for
those not into racing. The rally takes off at 9:30 a.m. on Sat.,
March 1. Team racing begins at 11:15 a.m. on March 1, and
spectators are encouraged to check out the action. The four fastest
teams will be announced mid-day, and race finals kick-off at 1:15
p.m. at the Paradise Race Course. The competition will be a
head-to-head elimination.

Bluegrass double-bill blows into Durango
What: Performances from Greensky Bluegrass Band and Rock and Rye

Big strings are rolling into Durango for an evening of picking
this Thursday. The Greensky Bluegrass Band, a rising national
talent, and local band Rock and Rye will join forces for an evening
of bluegrass at the Henry Strater Theater.
Making its first appearance in Durango, the Greensky Bluegrass
Band boasts a traditional bluegrass sound fused with original
compositions and improvisation. Greensky has been touring
extensively since 2005, sharing playbills with bands such as Yonder
Mountain String Band, the Sam Bush Band, Bela Fleck and the
Flecktones, Keller Williams and Hot Buttered Rum. They are also the
winners of the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band
Competition.
Recently joining the quintet is dobro player Anders Beck, a
former Durangoan who played with the Broke Mountain Bluegrass Band
and Wayword Sons before heading off to Michigan to join Greensky
Bluegrass.
Greensky Bluegrass was formed in 2000 by Michael Arlen Bont
(banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), and Paul Hoffman (mandolin). The
band’s goal was to establish a distinctive voice based in the
musicians’ array of influences and musical backgrounds. By
maintaining a balance between tradition and improvisation, Greensky
Bluegrass has developed a following and continues to draw new
audiences as well.
