Opening Day set for Saturday

Skiers, start your engines.

After some initial problems getting out of the gates, the 2008-09 ski season is officially off and running. Durango Mountain Resort will open for Benefit Day this Sat., Dec. 6, with top-to-bottom skiing on the Six Pack. Proceeds from the $15 lift tickets will go to the local chapter of the American Red Cross and the Durango Winter Sports Foundation.

DMR Marketing Director Sven Brunso said nearly 9 inches of snow from last weeks’ storm coupled with cold night-time temperatures were enough to push Purgatory over the top. Colder temps are also forecasted this week, making for prime snow-making conditions.

“Last year, we retrofitted the snow guns, and we were able to make two times as much snow with half the energy,” he said of this year’s opening day effort.

However, Brunso did note that only intermediate terrain will be open this weekend, and novice skiers and boarders are advised to wait. “No beginner terrain will be available for opening weekend,” he said.

Season passes will not be honored on Benefit Day but can be used starting Sun., Dec. 7.

Benefit Day tickets can be purchased either at the Purg ticket window or in advance at both City Markets, Nature’s Oasis, the Durango chapter of the American Red Cross or from Winter Sports Foundation members.
