The first Durango Iron Horse Chef
What: A first annual locavore cooking competition
Where: The Durango Farmers Market, 259 W. 9th St.
When: Saturday, Aug. 23, from 8:30 a.m.-noon

Locavores can rejoice on Saturday. The Durango Iron Horse Chef, a new competition where four local chefs prepare a locally grown meal, goes into the spotlight during this week’s Durango Farmers Market.

Presented by the Colorado State University Extension, Healthy Lifestyles La Plata, La Plata County and the Farmers Market, the event highlights the local harvest, local chefs and what can be done with local ingredients. Downtown Durango restaurant owners and chefs have supported the “locavore” concept and many were eager to participate in this event, says Julie Hudak of Healthy Lifestyles. The chefs at this year’s event will be Chris Crowl of Cosmopolitan, Will Nolan of The Palace, Dave Cuntz of Mahogany Grill, and Dave Stewart of Seasons. The winning chef will be recognized with a personalized Durango Iron Horse Chef Competition jacket.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. as the chefs prepare their entries. Each contestant starts with locally raised meat (goat, lamb, beef or pork) as their “secret ingredient.” They are then allowed an hour and a half to shop the market for additional ingredients and prepare their meal before the judges review the entries. Chefs’ creations will be judged on taste, creativity, presentation and originality in use of market products.

The Belleville Outfit plays the Henry Strater
What: A show from Austin’s “best new local band”
Where: The Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.
When: Fri., Aug 22. Doors open at 7 p.m.

A mix of gypsy swing, big band jazz and cross-genre Americana takes the stage in Durango this week. The Henry Strater presents the Belleville Outfit, a six-piece band from Austin, on Aug. 22.

In just 12 months, the Belleville Outfit has jumped into the limelight and played for more than 25,000 people across the nation. They’ve sold out shows from Texas to New York and have performed at the Strawberry Festival, South by Southwest, Merlefest and wowed the audience at this spring’s Folk ‘n Bluegrass Festival in Pagosa Springs.

The Belleville Outfit came together when The DesChamps Band of Spartanburg, S.C., was offered a slot at Merlefest 2007. The former band of singer-songwriter-guitarist Rob Teter was no more, so he got former band-mate, singer-guitarist Marshall Hood, and vocalist-violinist Phoebe Hunt to New Orleans to meet drummer Jonathan Konya, pianist Connor Forsyth and upright bass player Jeff Brown. After two days of marathon rehearsals, the band was ready for its first shows together – complete with a sound that mixes members’ Appalachian roots and the traditional jazz of New Orleans, American swing, blues, country, soul and gypsy music.

The band’s debut independent album, “Wanderin’,” was released this February and spent 16 weeks in the Top 20 on the Americana Music Charts, rising as high as #10. In addition, Austin Chronicle music critic Jim Caligiuri recently named the Belleville Outfit the “best new local band” in Austin for 2008.

Friday’s show gets under way at 7 p.m. with free Gypsy-swing dance lessons. The Belleville Outfit will go on at 8 p.m. Tickets and more information are available online at www.HenryStraterTheatre.com or by calling 375-7160.
