Abbey hosts top hip hop acts
What: An all-ages show from the Jurassic 5 and Crown City Rockers artists
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Sun., April 20, 10 p.m.

High-grade hip hop lands on the stage of the Abbey Theater once again this week. Akil, of Jurassic 5, and Raashan Ahmad, of Crown City Rockers & Coolzey, play a show at the independent theater on April 20.

Akil, who was born and raised in the hectic streets of South Central Los Angeles, has a sense for the ills of urban society and love for hip hop that gained early notice among critics and fans. An MC, Akil started first performing with his group Rebels of Rhythmz, which later morphed into Jurassic 5. J5 is known for its old school harmony and uplifting lyrical content, which Akil played a big part in building. Akil also added his talent as a producer to help create the Jurassic 5 formula. He has collaborated with artists such as The Pharcyde, Ice T and Meshell Ndegeocello.

Joining Akil at the Abbey this Sunday will be Raashan Ahmad, of Crown City Rockers. Crown City Rockers is a five-member hip hop band from Oakland by way of Boston and Pasadena. Formerly known as Mission, they play old school inflected hip hop with live instrumentation. The band is currently working on its upcoming album, “5 Gold Stars.”

This Sunday’s all-ages show gets under way at 10 p.m. For information, call the Abbey at 385-1711.

The Four Corners goes big for Earth Day
What: Film screenings, solar tours, fund-raising events and more
Where: Throughout Durango and the Four Corners
When: April 18-26

The Four Corners will be celebrating the 38th anniversary of Earth Day at various events over the upcoming week. Local events commemorating the annual celebration of the Earth start April 18 with the fourth annual Great Outdoor Gear Silent Auction Fund-raiser at the Dolores Community Center. The event includes a screening of “Mountainfilm on Tour,” a compilation of films from the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival. Bidding on a selection of outdoor gear, river gear and goods and services from local merchants will begin at 6 p.m., and films get under way at 6:30 p.m.

A second Earth Day-related activity sponsored by LPEA in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity is the “Yes We Can … Smash!!” event. The event is a mass smashing of aluminum cans in order to make transport from Durango to Cortez more efficient. Smashing happens in the LPEA’s parking lot in Bodo Park, 45 Stewart St., on Sat., April 19. Volunteers are welcome to smash cans but must sign up in advance by calling Nadine at 382-9735.

The Four Corners Gem & Mineral Club will provide another opportunity to celebrate Earth Day at the Annual Earth Day Open House & Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the clubhouse, located at 2350 Main Ave. There will be a number of vendors selling hand-made jewelry, cut and polished stones, and mineral specimens.

Durangoans can also celebrate Earth Day with St. Columba’s Parish on April 19 & 20. The church will host displays on ways to preserve the environment and be responsible stewards of the Earth’s resources at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10-11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Commons, located at 701 Camino del Rio, will be commemorating Earth Day on April 22 with tours of the newly installed solar panels donated by BP America from noon-1 p.m. The 60 solar panels are generating 50 to 60 kilowatt hours per day, which is enough power to meet the electrical needs of three to four average homes in Durango. In addition, the partnering 12 nonprofits housed in the Commons will participate in a building-wide clean up that morning.

The culminating Earth Day event will be the Earth Day Celebration at Rotary Park scheduled for Sat., April 26. Live music, activities and displays, and information will be available throughout the day.
