Maria’s launches book drive
What: A book drive in conjunction with the La Plata Family Centers Coalition
Where: Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.
When: Nov. 23-Dec. 18

Durangoans have a chance to give the gift of literacy during this holiday season. Maria’s Bookshop, in conjunction with the La Plata Family Centers Coalition, is sponsoring a “families helping families holiday book drive.”

The program is being run like an “Angel Tree,” and those stopping by Maria’s will have the chance to select a child by picking a card off the book drive “tree.” The card will hold information about a local child served by the Family Support Program. With this info and the guidance of Maria’s elves, the perfect book can be selected and wrapped. In addition, Maria’s is offering a 15 percent discount on books bought for the children’s book drive. The kids will eventually receive their books at a holiday party held at the Family Center on Dec. 20.

The Family Support Program provides families opportunities to work with trained advocates in setting goals and securing resources. The Center works to help provide a happy and healthy haven for local families, with the book drive and party is essential part of the holiday program.

For more information about the book drive call 247-1438 or visit www.mariasbookshop.com.

The Polar Express back on the local rails
What: The D&SNGRR’s annual holiday-themed train trip
Where: Leaving the Durango depot
When: Daily through Dec. 23

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad kicked off service to the “North Pole” early this week. Rides aboard The Polar Express began on Nov. 21, as the train departed the Durango depot for a one-hour, 15-minute round-trip journey to the “North Pole.” The holiday-themed trip continues through Dec. 23.

Once onboard the Polar Express, hot cocoa and treats are served as passengers read along with the holiday children’s classic, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. In line with the book, children are encouraged to wear their pajamas for the ride. Upon arriving at the “North Pole,” Santa and his helper will greet and board the train, giving each child his or her very own sleigh bell. “Chefs” aboard each car lead the passengers in singing Christmas carols on the ride back to Durango.

The D&SNGRR got into the holiday spirit with an early Polar Express trip on Nov. 20. All proceeds from that first trip supported the Durango Discovery Museum.

Exact dates and excursion times are available by calling 247-2733 or 888-TRAIN-07, or by visiting our www.durangotrain.com.

Singing With Santa returns to Main
What: The annual holiday kick-off event
Where: Beginning at the corner of College and Main
When: Fri., Nov. 23 at 5:30 p.m.

Santa Claus is paying downtown Durango a visit this week. The Durango Chamber of Commerce’s annual “Singing With Santa” holiday kick-off event returns this Fri., Nov. 23. This year, a new tradition begins by “putting it in reverse” and starting the procession at College and Main at 5:30 p.m. and ending with the lighting of the Christmas tree at Buckley Park.

Aside from the reversal, the celebration remains unchanged, including Santa and Mrs. Claus leading the procession, Christmas carols, free glow sticks, complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, photos with Santa, and more.

“For the past umpteen years, our ‘Singing With Santa’ event has always started at Buckley Park and ended at Rio Grande Land. But this year, with the makeover of Buckley Park complete, it seemed like the perfect time to showcase the big, beautiful spruce tree on the corner just waiting to be adorned in holiday lights,” said Rita Simon, Chamber manager.

La Plata Electric generously provided environmentally friendly, energy efficient LED lights for the tree and Dillon Crane and Durango Fire and Rescue took on the precarious job of hanging the lights on the 100-foot tree.

For more information on Singing with Santa, call the Chamber at 247-0312.
