Open Shutter exhibits ‘Classic Images’
What: A show of black-and-white photography by Colorado photographer Cole Thompson
Where: The Open Shutter Gallery, 755 E. Second Ave.
When: Through July 25.
“Classic Images in Black and White” are now adorning
the walls of the Open Shutter Gallery. The exhibit, which runs
through July 25, is a collection of photographs by Colorado
photographer Cole Thompson.
Cole’s images are rich with texture, tonality and contrast
and have been awarded numerous merits. This selection of work
exhibits a broad range of Cole’s subject matter and shooting
styles. All of his images are personally prepared using Epson
archival ink printers and materials. The Open Shutter exhibit
captures a soft light, which produces a nostalgic mood.
When asked about his work and what it means, Thompson references
a quote by Jean Cocteu: “An artist cannot speak about his/her
art any more than a plant can discuss horticulture.”
For more information on the show, contact the Open Shutter at
382-8355 or visit www.openshuttergallery.com.

Men Who Grill take over Main What: The Women’s Resource Center’s annual fund-raiser
Where: The 1200 block of Main Ave.
When: Sat., June 2, from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
There’s only one local event where you can watch a whole
roasted pig spin over an open flame, line up to be served by men
wearing nothing more than animal-print sarongs, and then choose
winners among dozens of costumed chefs. This Saturday, Men Who
Grill, an annual fund-raiser for the
Women’s Resource Center, returns to downtown Durango from
11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
During the event, up to 25 teams of grillers will vie for top
honors from attendees and judges who choose winners based upon
taste and presentation. The chefs, both amateur and professional,
choose a theme and decorate their booths and don costumes
accordingly. The grilled goodies also relate to the theme.
In years past, Men Who Grill has seen the likes of teams such as
“The Wasabi Brothers” serving up grilled seafood, the
“Deep South Grill Team” slinging “road
kill,” “Men Are Pigs” spinning the aforementioned
roasted pig, and “The Neanderthals” dishing out spicy
barbeque. This year’s teams promise to be even more
competitive, offering interesting fare for meat lovers and
vegetarians alike.
This year’s event includes a performance by the local
bluegrass maestros, the Badly Bent. Admission includes tastes from
all the grilling teams and free soda or bottled water, and beer and
wine will be available for purchase. Attendees are asked to leave
their dogs at home.
For more information or to purchase tickets, call 247-1242.

Voices in American Drama back at FLC
What: The first installment of the summer stage play readings
Where: The Fort Lewis College Amphitheater
When: Thurs., May 31 at 8 p.m.
Outdoor theatre makes its return to Fort Lewis College this
week. “Voices in American Drama: A Summer Play Reading
Series” begins at the Fort Lewis College Amphitheater
tonight, May 31. The series continues through the summer, and
admission is free.
The Fort Lewis College theatre department first kicked off
Voices in American Drama last summer. The goal of the staged play
readings has been threefold: provide students with more acting
opportunities, expose new playwrights to a wider audience and offer
a free theater experience for the Durango public throughout the
summer.
This Thursday will feature four new plays. Up first is “In
the Pink” by Pamela Skjolsvik, a short comedic piece in which
a makeup saleswoman and a customer with much on his mind share
makeup tips and more. The actors will then move into the second
offering, “Ghost Story” by Kate Tarker, a kitchen table
drama set in the present-day Congo. “Modern Tragedy” by
James Ashby, an irreverent one-act examination of beliefs, will be
the third offering. The May installment of Voices in American Drama
wraps up with “Richard Foreman Made Me Do It” by Alec
Fritz, a piercing but disconnected look at what it means to be
human.
The evening gets under way at 8 p.m. For information on
“Voices in American Drama,” log onto www.theatre.fortlewis.edu.
