‘Question of Power’ goes on display
What: A one-day-only exhibition on the conflicts surrounding coal-fired power
Where: The Open Shutter Gallery, 755 E. Second Ave.
When: Sat., July 14 with an open house reception from 5-7 p.m.

The conflict between coal-burning power plants and the indigenous people who live near them goes up on the walls of the Open Shutter Gallery this week. For one day only, July 14, the gallery will exhibit the work of photographer Carlan Tapp. An open house reception will be held from 5-7 p.m.

Currently a Santa Fe resident, Tapp is a descendant of the Wicocomico Tribe, Taptico family. In 2005, he began “Question of Power,” a photographic documentary project centered on the Four Corners region and the current social, health and environmental issues facing Native American people.

For “Question of Power,” Tapp interviewed and photographed Diné tribal members directly impacted by coal-power development in the San Juan Basin. His work includes documentation of the newly proposed Desert Rock Power Plant. During the Saturday event, Diné tribal members will attend to discuss impacts from coal-development and the implications of a third coal plant in the region.

This event is sponsored by Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment, the Energy Minerals Law Center and San Juan Citizens Alliance. For more information on Tapp’s project, visit www.questionofpower.org. For details on the Saturday event, call the Open Shutter Gallery at 382-8355.
