Snowdown returns for 29th year
What: Durango’s annual celebration of winter Where: All over the greater Durango area
When: Jan. 31 through Feb. 4

Durangoans will again gather to celebrate winter starting this Wednesday with the beginning of the 29th annual edition of Snowdown. More than 60 contests, events and gatherings will take place starting Wed., Jan. 31, and running through Sun., Feb. 4. And as the event suggests, participants will have the opportunity to “Don your finest eye patch, pull on yer boots, swash your buckle and head out to plunder, pillage and wager the nights away in this rollicking, carousing, treasure-hunting celebration of Snowdown!”

On Jan. 31, look for the Snowdown Jolly Roger’s Scavenger Hunt, the Snowdown Gong Show; the ever-popular Fashion Dos and Don’ts; the Magic Musical Mystery Tour; the Polar Beer Plunge; Lady F’s Lunacy; the 19th annual Snowdown Jokedown; the bartender’s contest; the Snowdown Singles Charity Auction; Spellabration; cribbage; foosball and pool tournaments; and the annual Bicycle Roller Races. Concert Hall hosts Laser show
What: Paramount’s Original LaserSpectacular Featuring the Music of Pink Floyd
Where: The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
When: Fri., Jan. 26, at 7 p.m.

Fans of psychedelia rejoice. Paramount’s Original LaserSpectacular featuring the music of Pink Floyd visits the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College this week. The show, mixing visuals choreographed to one of the greatest bands of all time, takes place at 7 p.m. on Fri., Jan. 26.

Three-dimensional effects are created through a process called chromodepth, giving the illusion of depth through the layering of different colors. Other extras include prism glasses, which transform one image into six; animated neon figures set in motion; a giant inflatable that comes to life; and re-mastered

audio. Songs will include “Learning to Fly,” with images of the history of flight; “Comfortably Numb;” and “Run Like Hell.”

“Pink Floyd’s music is very dramatic and visual,” said LaserSpectacular Producer Steve Monistere. “You can see or imagine images when you listen to their music. Without any lighting effects at all, there is still a show in your mind. Now imagine using lasers, lighting, video and other special visual effects to interpret what your mind is ‘seeing,’ and that is why people love this show so much.”

More information is available on the web at www.durangoconcerts.com, by calling 247-7657, or by visiting the Ticketing Services Office behind Magpie’s at 7th Street and Main Ave. Doors to the Concert Hall and concessions, serving beer, wine and nonalcoholic beverages and snacks, open at 6 p.m.
