Fort Lewis College hosts Winter Commencement
What: The graduation ceremony for Fort Lewis’ 42nd class
Where: Whalen Gymnasium
When: Sat., Dec. 15, at 10 a.m.

Winter commencement exercises for Fort Lewis College’s 42nd baccalaureate class will be held this Saturday in the Whalen Gymnasium. More than 200 students are eligible to receive their bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees at the first of two annual commencement ceremonies. Spring graduation is scheduled for April 26.

Colorado’s Lt. Governor Barbara O’Brien will deliver this year’s commencement address.   O’Brien was sworn in as Colorado’s 47th lieutenant governor last January, becoming only the fourth woman to hold the position in Colorado history. Prior to becoming lt. governor, she spent the last 16 years as president of the Colorado Children’s Campaign, a statewide public policy and advocacy organization. O’Brien has also led major policy initiatives that increased funding for schools, created charter schools, expanded early childhood education, increased access to health care for uninsured children, reduced teen smoking, and expanded after-school programs. O’Brien credits her strong passion and commitment to children’s issues to her education and health policy work for former Gov. Richard Lamm.

Fort Lewis College Winter Commencement 2007 will take place on Sat., Dec. 15, in Whalen Gymnasium at 10 a.m. A moment of silence will be observed during the event for Maxwell Silver, the Fort Lewis student who died earlier this month.

Bar-D Wranglers to play Christmas Jubilee
What: A holiday show from the Bar-D Wranglers
Where: The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
When: Fri., Dec. 14. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Durango’s beloved cowboy crooners will ring in the holiday season this Friday at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. Durango’s biggest stage hosts the Bar-D Wranglers Christmas Jubilee on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.

Founded by Cy Scarborough in 1969, the Bar-D Wranglers offer their own unique style of Western music, cowboy poetry and humor. The band currently features Scarborough, fiddler Matt Palmer, bassist Joel Racheff, guitarist Levi Mullen and guitarist Gary Cook.

Known for more than summer entertainment at the Bar-D Chuckwagon, the Wranglers have been touring this past fall and recently returned from a premier live performance at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. The concert will be broadcast on the Grand Ole Opry television and radio shows. Their “tour” also found them performing at a town celebration in Filmore, Utah, and the Chuckwagon Jamboree in Jackson, Wyo.

Back in Durango, the band has been focusing on the upcoming Christmas Jubilee. The Wranglers have planned a warm-hearted and fun-filled show that will focus on the true meaning of the holidays.

Doors to the Concert Hall and concessions open at 6 p.m. Limited tickets for the Christmas Jubilee are available on the web at www.durangoconcerts.com, by calling 247-7657 or by visiting the Concert Hall’s Ticketing Office at 7th St. and Main Ave. behind Magpies.
