“I went spray tanning once and got my hair stuck in the vent. It took two hours to get me out.”

Local kids do good

The newly christened Team Durango proved it is a force to be reckoned with after an impressive 2nd place finish in last weekend’s Adventure Xtream race in Moab.

Clocking in at a time of 5:58:19, local speed freaks Rick Callies, Mike Freeburn, Ashlie Angel and Brett Sublett were just 11 minutes off the winning pace of Team Bagel Works (which, we are told, despite its doughy moniker is actually a respectable name in the world of adventure racing.) Third place in the co-ed four-person category went to Team Nike ACG (Ken Meyer, Mike Dawson, Peter Courogen and Julie Leasure), which finished a distant 27 minutes back.

Looking at the official race results, it appears that the local kids stayed neck in neck with the dough boys through the paddle and first bike legs, only to lose precious minutes in the rapel/trek and second bike legs.

Racers in the Moab Adventure Xstream competed on a 60-mile course testing their skills in trail running, class II kayaking, mountain biking and rappelling. Additionally, teams had to navigate the course on their own.

Team Durango will have the home field advantage for the next Adventure Xstream race, a 24-hourer that takes place June 10-11 in and around the greater Durango area. The course will feature singletrack mountain biking, trail running, a Tyrolean traverse and kayaking within the heart of the majestic San Juans.

Official results, race photos and more information on the series can be found at www.GravityPlay.com.

Baggin’ the Body Bag

In a similar vein of local extremist does good, Taylor Wisner, 17, son of Ronda Edwards and Jaime Wisner, of Durango, took home top honors in his division last weekend at the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Telemark Championships in Crested Butte.

And talk about “stiff” competition. Facing teliers from all over the country, Wisner, a student at the Crested Butte Academy, scored his winning run on a shot called the “Body Bag,” no less.

Stacy Falk, a student at Fort Lewis College, took 7th in the women’s division.
