The spirit of giving, which is evident year round in Durango, peaks every December as the holidays bring out the best in the community. Project Merry Christmas once again leads the charge by making the Christmas wishes of many come true this holiday season. With the help of tireless volunteers and countless local donors, bags and boxes of all shapes and sizes are filled to the brim for hundreds of La Plata County families in need. And as the big day approaches, local children will be bounding toward the tree with smiling eyes, knowing that Santa Claus came through in fine form.

Volunteer Nancy Smith enters Project Merry Christmas one more time before heading home after a long day of work Friday afternoon. Otoka Walter helps redistribute donated clothing at Project Merry Christmas headquarters, located behind Home Depot, on Monday. Dress and Dance Dora sits on a packing table at Project Merry Christmas last week. A youngster eager for the holiday season looks through the donated toys while his mother helps out at Project Merry Christmas earlier this week. Nancy Smith packs up bags of lollipops to be distributed as a sweet holiday treat. A box accepts cash donations while volunteer Pam Barsanti, right, and Project Merry Christmas President Jamie McLaughlin finish up last-minute business on Monday morning.
