Mother Nature has taught local powder hounds a lesson in patience this season. However, snow riders of all types were able to sink their teeth into the 2005/2006 ski season as Durango Mountain Resort ushered in winter Saturday with opening day. An enthusiastic crowd took advantage of a perfect winter day in the San Juans and loosened up their legs for the long season ahead. With some recent snowfall and an abundance of man-made snow, the terrain is well prepped for the coming season. So, if youve waited to dust off the skis, wait no longer as its time call in sick, hit the slopes and point it.

A trio of snowboarders catch a late afternoon lift up the hill at Durango Mountain Resort's opening day last Saturday. Ned Daley and 6-year-old Ryann take in the view before heading down for another run. Rufus guards his booth as Phil White approaches to say a quick hello to man's best friend. A boarder gathers momentum as he exits the Six Pack and heads down the hill Saturday afternoon. A rider shows off his opening day spirit with a pair of Bermuda shorts.
