Abbey screens 'The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill'
What: An acclaimed film benefiting Durango Nature Studies
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Through May 27 with benefit screenings May 13 at 6:30 & 8 p.m.
Durango Nature Studies and For the Birds are teaming up to present two benefit showings of the critically acclaimed documentary "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill."
The film tells the true story of Mark Bittner, a homeless street musician in San Francisco, and his amazing relationship with a flock of wild green-and-red parrots. As Bittner searches for meaning in his life, he is unaware that the wild parrots provide all that he needs.
"The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" details urban wilderness from both Bohemian and avian perspectives and links the parrots' antics with human behavior. A surprise ending completes Bittner's search for importance in his life and demonstrates the correlation of the themes presented.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer called the film "a special, strangely soothing movie experience that wonderfully celebrates the intricate diversity of life on Earth and the profound emotional bond that can exist between man and beast."
Proceeds from the opening night of this film, Fri., May 13, will benefit Durango Nature Studies. There will be benefit screenings at 6 & 8:30 p.m., and each will be preceded by presentations by Durango Nature Studies naturalists. The Abbey Theatre will continue to show "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" through May 27. The film shows most nights at 5, 7 and 9 p.m.
