The Center of Southwest Studies presents "Circle of Spirit: Navajo and Tibetan Wisdom for Living" through Oct. 21. The work of Santa Fe photographer Tony Stromberg returns to the Open Shutter Gallery, 755 East Second Ave. The exhibit, "Spirit," will show through June 15. Spring Gallery Walk returns
What: The annual Spring Gallery Walk
Where: Eight galleries in downtown Durango
When: Friday, May 6, 5-9 p.m.

Local fine art galleries will again open their doors for the annual Durango Spring Gallery Walk this Friday. Each fall and spring, the Durango Gallery Association provides a chance for art lovers to spend the night strolling in and out of the many receptions that coincide with the event.

Gallery-goers will have a lot of ground to cover between 5 & 9 p.m. with eight galleries participating. They include: the Open Shutter Gallery, the Durango Arts Center, Ellis Crane Gallery, Termar Gallery, Lime Berry, Sorrel Sky Gallery and Toh-Atin Gallery.

This spring's walk will, as always, include appetizers, beverages and entertainment at each of the galleries. Walkers can obtain a free "passport" at any of the participating venues. Throughout the next week, participants will have the opportunity to complete the walk, validating their passports with stamps from each gallery. Completed passports will be entered in a drawing for gallery items and certificates at local restaurants.

The Gallery Walk has earned a strong reputation over the last 19 years and consistently brings people from throughout the region to downtown to view the latest exhibits. Members of the Durango Gallery Association are dedicated to the promotion of original and professional art in Durango. In addition to the Spring Gallery Walk, the association will host a series of "First Friday" events in the summer months and a Fall Gallery Walk in September. For more information call 259-2606.

Durango celebrates Cinco de Mayo
What: The 11th annual Durango Cinco de Mayo celebration

For the 11th year, Durango will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a fiesta at Santa Rita Park. The celebration runs Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and will be crammed with events and local entertainers.

"The celebration is for the recognition of the Latino culture and youth and historically to commemorate the prideful victory by the Mexican troops against a French army in the May 5, 1862, Battle of Puebla in Puebla, Mexico," said event coordinator DeeDee de Haro-Brown. "Prior to this, there was nothing being done in the community to recognize an ethnic Latino celebration. This is a positive way to celebrate."

The family affair will be complete with ongoing music and dancing by local performers including Mariachi de Durango, Ballet Folklorico of Durango and the dance band Los Tiburones. Back by popular demand, a favorite for the local crowd, Ernestine Romero (La Jovencita) also will perform.

Other events include ongoing arts and crafts booths, food booths, pi`F1ata breaking, face painting, children's activities and games, a silent auction, and jalape`F1o and watermelon eating contests.

"Durango Dance Party" takes over Durango's top venue this weekend. The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College hosts the event on Saturday, May 7, and at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 8.

"Durango Dance Party" is a high-energy dance show performed by some of Durango's most talented young dancers. Presented by Dance in the Rockies, a local dance school, the cast ranges from children as young as 3 years old to adults and features the award-winning Rocky Mountain Rockettes. From lyrical to jazz, hip hop to tap, the show will be a fun time for all.

The Concert Hall's new Spotlight Lounge, serving beverages and snacks, opens one hour prior to showtimes.
