Earthrise celebrates Earth Day
What: A gathering in celebration of the earth
Where: The Earthrise Community, 1304 Florida Road
When: Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Durangoans have a chance to celebrate the spring weather and the 35th anniversary of Earth Day this Saturday at the Earthrise Community. The gathering is planned in part to bring awareness to the possibilities of building affordable housing with sustainable, community-oriented designs and building materials. The Earthrise organization is preparing to break ground on a development of clustered, high-density homes this summer. The gathering is also a celebration of the Earth, including entertainment, kids activities and food and refreshments.
At the gathering, groups tabling for the cause include the San Juan Citizens Alliance; the Fort Lewis College Environmental Center; Animas Conservancy; Sunland Renewable Energy, an energy-efficiency and solar-thermal business; Cocina Linda; Durango Natural Foods; and JJ's lemonade.
Joaquin Karcher, a green-building architect and designer of Earthrise, from Taos, N.M., will give a lecture on the fundamental features of green building and design at 1 p.m. Karcher, who has 20 years of international green building experience, will explain ways to design homes that reduce heating and energy bills. While showing examples of recently built green homes, Karcher will teach about the costs and concerns associated with the building style. The compressed earth block design already in use at Earthrise is just one example of how green building breaks the conventional molds of modern-day construction.
Music and dancing also will highlight the event. The Matahala Moondancers, a belly dancing group, and the Dances for Universal Peace will both take the stage. Those playing music at the event include rock funk band Formula 151, and jam band Solar Bear. Plus, there will be activities for kids, entertainment from the Catch it Quick Jugglers, craft projects and a drum circle.
Parking on site will be limited, and in the spirit of the celebration, people are encouraged to take the bus, carpool, bike or walk to Earthrise. For more information on the event, call 259-9488 or 259-6818.
