DSCPA brings Acoustic Syndicate back to town
What: A dance concert by the North Carolina jamgrass band
Where: The Durango Arts Center, 802 E. Second Ave.
When: Tues., March 15, at 7:30 p.m.
Hard driving jamgrass from North Carolina returns to Durango this week. Courtesy of The Durango Society of Cultural & Performing Arts (DSCPA), Acoustic Syndicate will play an all-ages show this Tuesday at the Durango Arts Center.
Long known in jam-band and bluegrass circles for mixing styles, Acoustic Syndicate's name belies the electric energy of its live shows. "Despite the acoustic part of this band's name, there's something clearly electric about Acoustic Syndicate's sound. The group perfectly fills the gap between bands like the String Cheese Incident and more traditional acts like the Seldom Scene," raved Relix magazine.
The North Carolina-based quintet has stolen the show at major festivals like Bonnaroo and Telluride Bluegrass as well as at smaller, more intimate venues. They last played Durango in a sold-out, standing-room-only DSCPA affair at the Arts Center in January 2003.
The three-part harmonies created by brothers Bryon and Fitz McMurry and cousin Steve McMurry owe as much to the Beach Boys as they do to bluegrass family bands like the Monroes, Stanleys, Osbornes and McCourys. The band's latest recording, "Long Way Round," enlisted legendary Texas music producer Lloyd Maines, and the band considers it its best project ever.
While the March 15 show is being billed as an all-ages dance concert, the Arts Center features ample seating in their newly-renovated theater. Acoustic Syndicate goes on stage at 7:30 p.m. For more information or ticketing, call DAC at 259-2606.

Artie Shaw Orchestra plays concert hall
What: A show by the legendary big band
Where: The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
When: Wed., March 16. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Big band jazz takes center stage at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College this week. One of the top acts of the big band era, the Artie Shaw Orchestra, plays the concert hall next Wednesday. Doors to the Concert Hall and the Spotlight Lounge open at 6 p.m.
Jazz clarinetist Artie Shaw, famed in the 1930s and 1940s for classic recordings such as "Begin the Beguine" and "Oh Lady Be Good," passed away recently at the age of 94. His legacy lives on, however, with The Artie Shaw Orchestra, under the direction of Dick Johnson.
Using the standard big band instrumentation of five saxophones, three trombones, four trumpets, piano, bass and drums, Johnson leads an organization of some of the best musicians from Boston, New York and Washington - most of whom have been touring with the band for years.Johnson was bequeathed the orchestra by Shaw himself in 1983, an act that Johnson deemed the ultimate compliment.
"Dick Johnson leads the orchestra with all of the suave, intelligent, swinging Shaw arrangements of his classics, including 'Star Dust,' 'Dancing in the Dark' and 'Moon Glow,'" said Gary Penington, concert hall managing director."The orchestra has a unique formula for pleasing the full spectrum of audiences, satisfying the 'Begin the Beguine' fans and classic jazz fans alike. It'll be a fun evening."
Tickets for the concert are available online at www.durangoconcerts.com or by calling the box office at 247-7657.
