According to our friend the groundhog, we're in for six more
weeks of winter. And what a winter it's been! The skiing continues
to be excellent, and the Town Downhill race series is in full swing at
Durango Mountain Resort, calling all those who "feel the need for
speed," to quote the Top Gun cliche. The annual speed-oriented
event has been going for years and skiers wanting to race the clock
can sign up the morning of each race, pay the $15 entry fee, and get
ready to soar down Upper Hades. All that's required is a helmet and
stable equipment. As an added bonus, those without passes can take
their race bibs down to the ticket office (once you register for the
race) and get a discounted lift ticket. The next Town Downhill races
will be February 12, February 19, and March 5. If downhill's a little
out of your league, there are two races left in DMR's Local Motion
Race Series-a Feb. 20 slalom and finals for giant slalom on March 6.
Registration runs from 8:30-9:30 a.m. the morning of each race in
the Race Events office near Purgy's. Training runs get underway at
10 a.m., and the race goes off at 11 a.m. An awards party follows at
Lady Falconburgh's the evening of the race. Everyone wins schwag
in the raffle, (such as skis, poles, helmets, goggles, gift certificates)
no matter how you did in the race, and the top three in each category
win medals. Now's your chance to podium.
Jon Seibert taunts Upper Hades on his way to a quick time and spot on the podium.
The Town Downhill welcomes all kinds: powder
pants, skin suits, tele skiers, boarders, and skiers.
Race in the morning or bumps in the afternoon. Oh,
the choices.
A race official takes the quick route back to the top of the course.
Karen Bowlby and Joe Holgate keep the crew in line and the racers
coming.
Mia Wiggins takes a break from course-setting to enjoy
the sunshine.
The good old Purgatory emblem presides over the day of high speed skiing.
