Abbey hosts Tony Trischka Band
What: A show by the renowned banjo master
Where: The Abbey Theatre, 128 E. College
When: Friday, Aug. 6. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.
Banjo master and
innovator Tony Trischka stops over in Durango this Friday. Along
with his band, Trischka will take the stage at the Abbey Theatre on
Aug. 6.
Trischka is widely
recognized as one of the world's most innovative banjo players.
Throughout his 30-year career, he has explored a wide variety of
genres commonly considered off-limits for the banjo. It all got
started with the release of his debut album "Bluegrass Light" in
1973. The recording fused bluegrass, jazz, rock and classical
music, and for the first time, banjos, fiddles and mandolins were
hanging out with saxes, electric guitars and
synthesizers.
Perhaps the great praise
for Trischka comes from another bender of the banjo genre, B`E9la
Fleck. "Tony was ahead of his time," Fleck said. "My springboard
was Tony Trischka, and without Tony, none of what's happened with
my music would have
happened."
Long after that debut
album, Trischka has continued to push the limits of the medium, and
he has done it on stage and in the studio with the likes of Fleck,
David Grisman, the Violent Femmes, members of REM, William S.
Burroughs and Leftover Salmon.
Rolling Stone magazine wrote, "Tony Trischka shows a
conceptual daring that goes well beyond hot licks."
Trischka is currently accompanied by Michael Amendola on sax,
Bob Bowen on bass, Scott Neumann on drums and Rolf Sturm on guitar.
He says that the combination is working. "This is the first time
I've reached into other areas to find musicians. These guys excite
me and give me a brand new slant on my tunes."
Doors open for the Tony Trischka Band at 8:30 p.m. For more
information, call the Abbey Theatre at 385-1711.

A personal take on the Missionary Ridge Fire
What: A book signing with local author Bob Thompson
Where: Maria's Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.
When: Thursday, Aug. 5, at 6 p.m.
As the Missionary Ridge
fire moved in on Vallecito two summers ago, local author Bob
Thompson chose to stay and defend his home rather than evacuate.
Thompson recently published a book on this experience, and this
Thursday he will sign copies of Fire Story Vallecito Burning: A Personal Account of
the 2002 Missionary Ridge Fire at Maria's Bookshop.
The book is a compilation of personal stories, eyewitness
accounts, community interaction, and photographs taken by the
author, both aerial and on the ground. Thompson openly defines the
book as a personal rendering of the 2002 fires. He notes that the
book contains "startling revelations" that all is not well with
Forest Service fire fighting practices. He also comments that
Fire Story is a tale of the Vallecito community
working together.
Thompson is a semi-retired professor of geology and life
sciences and has spent his summers at his home in the Vallecito
Valley since 1990. He is also a licensed pilot and hang-gliding
champion and many of Fire Story's
photographs were taken from
an aerial view.
The booksigning runs from
6 to 7 p.m. and is free to the public. Books will be available for
purchase and signing. For more information, call Maria's at
247-1438.

Cerulean City comes to Durango
What: A concert by the jazz-funk band from Brooklyn
Where: Steamworks, 801 E. Second Ave.
When: Friday, August 6 at 9:30 p.m.
Funk and jazz straight from Brooklyn, N.Y., rolls back into
Durango this Friday, when Cerulean City (pronounced SIR-OOL-IAN)
returns to the stage at Steamworks.
The four-piece funk and jazz band formed in Brooklyn in 2003.
Now calling Ithaca, N.Y., its home, Cerulean City includes
Christian Smith, Kevin O'Brien and Lars Burggren. The trio, which
consists of guitar, bass and drums, has earned a strong reputation
for outstanding, wide-open live shows. Cerulean City also recently
released its debut CD, "Trio Grande," an effort jambase.com likens
to what Aquarium Rescue Unit may have sounded like without the
influence of Col. Bruce Hampton.
Cosimo Giovine, of Jammed Online
Magazine , wrote,
"Cerulean City, although not yet fully appreciated and celebrated
in the pages and minds of the jam band community, has managed to
create a CD that unites the jazz-funk-rock genre with a classic
sound with staying power."
Above all else, the band is known for its live performances of
an altogether original sound. Chris Pacetta, of Kindweb.com, called
Cerulean City "a band that is a true amalgamation of jazz, funk,
rock and groove. Born of a philosophy of melody over
self-indulgence, they play to satiate the crowd, not their
egos."
The Durango audience will have an opportunity to experience
Cerulean City this Friday at 9:30 p.m. For more information, call
Steamworks at 259-9200.
