Two days of top-flight fiddle competition, informal jams, arts and crafts, music workshops and special concerts roll into Mancos this weekend. The second annual Mancos Old Time Fiddlers' Contest will return to Echo Basin Ranch from May 30-June 1.

The first fiddle tunes of the weekend will be heard Friday night, May 30, from 7-9 p.m. at the Mancos Opera House in Mancos. Funds are currently being raised to renovate the Opera House. Fiddlers who have come from all over to compete in the contest will perform for free, and desserts and soft drinks will be served.

The following morning, the festival takes off outdoors at Echo Basin Ranch. Participants can sit under the pines and listen to fiddlers or hone their fiddling skills by attending one or more of the free fiddle workshops that will be given that day.

DSCPA brings alt-country duo to Durango
What: A concert by Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart
Where: The Durango Arts Center, 802 E. Second Ave.
When: Friday, May 30, 7:30 p.m.

The younger sister of legendary alt-country songwriter Steve Earle, Stacey has earned recognition with her 1998 release "Simple Gearle" and 2000's "Dancin' With Them That Brung Me." The two albums feature what the Dallas Morning News calls "spare, sparkling country-folk songs that bridge the sweetness of Lone Star State of Mind-era Nanci Griffith with the grounding grit of Gillian Welch."

Mojo magazine wrote, "It could be that Stacey's the best back-porch discovery since Dolly Parton tumbled out of the Appalachians."

Some of the biggest names in the music industry have taken note. Stacey has opened for the likes of Joan Baez, Guy Clark and Greg Brown.

As anyone who has heard the couple perform knows, Mark Stuart's elegant, fluid and deeply rooted guitar work is essential to the couple's live act. He honed his skills through years of playing everywhere from coffeehouses and roadhouses to arenas as a solo artist, in cover bands and as guitarist for Steve Earle's Dukes.

Although they've performed together since 1992 and have been married since 1993, Stacey and Mark waited until 2001 to officially bind their acts together. The couple released the double-disc set "Must Be Love" on Gearle Records in 2002.

The Durango Society of Cultural and Performing Arts last welcomed Stacey and Mark in 1999. Since then, they've played such festivals as the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival in Lyons and the Ottawa Blues Festival. The Stacey Earle/Mark Stuart concert marks the final concert of the DSCPA's 13th season. 259-2606 for details.
