Operation Merry Christmas

Help had many faces for Project Merry Christmas 2003, from self-titled “professional volunteers” like Kaye Weis,to high school clubs like the Bayfield High School National Honors Society. The Colorado Army National Guard donated time, while community members donated gifts and money, all to provide some 350 La Plata County families with a little extra joy this Christmas. (All money received was used to fulfill gift requests that were not already filled.) Recipients this year varied from the elderly to households with as many four children – and volunteers rallied to help them all.

The efforts will culminate on Saturday, Dec. 21, when firemen from around La Plata County will deliver the bags and boxes of clothing, toys and food to the recipients. Some families may be having a larger Christmas morning than they bargained for when as many as five bags full of goods arrive.
