Celebrating fondo memories: More than the helmets have changed
What: Todd and Ned’s Durango Dirt Fondo
When: Sept. 11-12
Where: In and around Durango
Durango’s gonna party like it’s 1990 this weekend, as Todd and Ned’s Durango Dirt Fondo descends on a trail near you.
Named for local biking legends Todd Wells and Ned Overend, the fondo – along with an assortment of other non-bike-required events – commemorates the 25th anniversary of the first-ever World MTB Championships, held at Purgatory in 1990. (Which was won by Overend and Juli Furtado.)

For those unfamiliar with the term “fondo,” it is an Italian word for a large, mass-start bike ride of both long and short varieties. The Durango version is expected to draw such blasts from the past as Furtado, John Tomac, Greg Herbold, Sara Ballantyne and Ruthie Matthes as well as more current stars like Travis Brown, Elke Brutsaert and up-and-comer, 22-year-old Howard Grotts. And of course, Todd and Ned, will be leading the pack.
“I’m really excited that this event is shaping up to be a reunion of archrivals and good friends from the early days of mountain bike racing,” said Overend. “We’re going to have a great mix of legendary racers along with some of the fastest riders on the international race circuit today. The riders are coming for the opportunity to reminisce about the early days of racing while riding our great local trails.”
The fun starts rolling Saturday morning with a 50-mile and 30-mile option featuring the most challenging singletrack the area can serve up. The 50-mile course will make a loop around Durango, using various different trail systems connected by transitions of paths and roads including, of course, a final stretch through Overend Mountain Park. Riders can expect to see sections familiar to them from the 2009 Singlespeeds, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and even the 2001 World Cup, depending upon one’s memory and longevity in the saddle. (Note: although a fondo is not a race per se, there will be timed sections for those so inclined).
Both courses will include food, mechanical and – god forbid – medical support and will start and finish at the Powerhouse Science Center, where a post-event party awaits riders.
For those not inclined to break a sweat here are other ways to get in on the action:
- Durango Lands Symposium, 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Fri., Sept. 11, Fort Lewis College Ballroom. Featuring Luis Benitez, Colorado’s new outdoor recreation director; Ruth Welch, BLM director for the State of Colorado; and mountain bike historian Tim Blumenthal
- 1990 Worlds 25th Anniversary Party, 6:30 p.m., Sat., Sept. 12, Powerhouse Science Center. Cash bar and food available.
- NICA Benefit Breakfast to support the High School Mountain Bike League, 9a.m., Sun. Sept. 13, Fort Lewis College, Wholly Habaneros/ Rocket Patio.
The fondo will be capped at 500 riders. Cost is $150 (50 mile) and $125 (30 mile) and includes a swag bag, trophy, party and entrance to the 25th anniversary World’s party later that night. To sign up or for more info., go to: www.toddandnedsfondo.com.
A portion of proceeds will benefit Ned and Todd’s favorite causes: Trails 2000 and the Mercy Health Foundation.
