‘Father of Conservation Biology’ comes to DAC

What: “Courageous Carnivores and Compromised Conservationists,” a talk by Michael Soulé
When: 5:30 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 3
Where: Durango Arts Center, 802 E 2nd Ave.

One of the most famous names in conservation biology comes to Durango tonight as Michael Soulé pays a visit to the Durango Arts Center. The noted author, Stanford-educated Phd and retired professor emeritus of environmental studies at University of California Santa Cruz will be presenting “Courageous Carnivores and Compromised Conservationists,” starting at 6:30 p.m. A self-described “possiblilist,” Soulé will discuss small steps that can be taken now to preserve the earth’s biodiversity in the decades ahead.

Often dubbed the “Father of Conservation Biology,” Soulé has helped create wildlife corridors in Australia and Africa; done field work on insects and animals in Africa, Mexico, the West Indies, California and Colorado; and written countless books and articles on conservation and the role of carnivores in our ecosystem. In addition to co-founding the Society for Conservation Biology and The Wildlands Network (formerly Wildlands Project), he was named one of Audubon Magazine’s top “100 Champions of Conservation of the 20th Century.”

He now lives near Paonia with his wife, Joli.

The lecture is part of the DAC’s annual member environmental exhibit, initiated to further awareness of humans’ impact on the natural world. This exhibit is an opportunity for member artists to create work that illuminates the splendor, fragility and magnificence of the natural world, according to the DAC.

The evening with Michael Soulé kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with a reception featuring various environmental organizations, such as San Juan Citizens Alliance, La Plata Open Space Conservancy, Conservation Colorado, Great Old Broads for Wilderness and more. Soulé will be introduced by Bruce Baizel, director of Earthworks, an oil and gas accountability firm.

In addition to Soulé’s talk, the environmental exhibit will also feature a free screening of “The Great Divide, ” a 2015 feature-length documentary on the history and need for cooperation on water conservation in the West. The screening takes place Thurs., Sept. 10, with doors opening for a reception at 4:30 p.m. followed by film and panel discussion at 7:15 p.m.
