Banff Film Festival returns to Durango for one-night stand

What: Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour
When:  7 p.m., Sat., March 14
Where: Smiley Theater, 1309 E. 3rd Ave.

The San Juan Citizen’s Alliance and Rocky Mountain Wild are bringing the world to Durango. The two local environmental organizations have once again teamed up to bring the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour to the Smiley Building theater, this Saturday, starting at 7 p.m.

This year the tour brings us the very best of nearly 400 films from around the globe; stories that are guaranteed to inspire us to continue exploring our environments.
A few of this year’s tour highlights include “Delta Dawn,” a story that follows the flow of the Colorado River to its mouth, in the Sea of Cortez off the coast of Mexico. Rarely navigable with water for the last 20 years, filmmaker Peter McBride was able to SUP the former wetland during an experimental pulse flow in the spring of 2014. Join McBride and his cohorts as they float past stunned locals, battle intense heat and negotiate vegetation-choked channels in the history-making descent that offers a sobering look at water consumption in the West.

Another film that local audiences may find near and dear to their hearts is “Sufferfest II: Desert Alpine,” winner of the 2014 Banff “People choice Award.” Rock climbers and best buds Cedar Wright and Alex Honnold return in this sequel to their popular first adventure to tackle the Southwest’s most notable desert towers, from Moab to Indian Creek to Shiprock, in a month’s time. As if the temperamental spring weather and tight schedule weren’t enough to bring on the pain, they do it all via bike. Late-night antics, hilarity and banter ensues.

Doors to this year’s festival open at 6 p.m. and tickets are available at Pine Needle Mountaineering, Backcountry Experience and Maria’s Bookshop. Proceeds will benefit San Juan Citizen’s Alliance and Rocky Mountain Wild.

For more information or a run down of films, go to www.banffmountainfestivals.ca.
