Tearing up skate park for Big Brothers Big Sisters
What: 8th annual “TIU4Tyler” Memorial Skate Competition
When: Sat., June 13, 10 a.m. registration; 11 a.m. competition
Where: Durango Skate Park
Friends and family of Tyler Valencia will once again be gathering at the Durango Skate Park to honor his memory and raise some money for a local charity. Known as “Tear it up for Tyler,” the 8th annual event starts at 11 a.m. Sat., June 13. Tickets can be purchased in advance online and at the Rec Center and on the day of the event at 10 a.m.
Tyler, who was killed in a car accident in the winter of 2006 at the age of 16, was a strong advocate for a new skate park. However, he died mere months before the new park opened. He is survived by his parents, sister and brother, all organizers of the Tear it Up event.
This year’s event is sponsored by The Boarding Haus and Durango Parks and Recreation and subsists solely on support and donations from the community. Since its inception, the comp has grown considerably, with categories in bowl, street and vert. It is open to all ages and ability levels.
The $10 entrance fee provides admittance into all events and includes a T-shirt, bracelet, drinks, lunch and prizes. One dollar from every entrance fee will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of La Plata County. The organizers of the event ask that all participants wear helmets. For more information or to donate or help, call Tyler’s mom, Charlett Warren, at 970-946-7799 and like the Facebook page Tiu4tyler Memorial Skate Competition.
