Indigenous dance comes to Concert Hall
What: “SEED,” an indigenous contemporary dance performance
When: 7:30 p.m., Sat., Nov. 15 and 2 p.m., Sun., Nov. 16
Where: Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
Tickets: $15/$25 available at www.durangoconcerts.com; by calling (970) 247-7657; or at the Durango Welcome Center, 8th St. and Main Ave.
The nation’s premier indigenous contemporary dance group, Dancing Earth, returns to Durango this weekend as part of Fort Lewis College’s ongoing Native American Heritage Month celebration. The group will be performing its latest work, “SEED,” which was done in collaboration with Fort Lewis College students and alumna as well as members of the local community. There will be two chances to catch the show: 7:30 p.m. Sat., Nov. 15 and 2 p.m., Sun., Nov. 16.
Headed up by director/choreographer Rulan Tangen, Dancing Earth is made up an entirely of indigenous dancers, composers, costumers, filmmakers, visual artists and crew members from dozens of tribes throughout North America. Tangen, based out of Santa Fe, brings nearly 30 years of international experience in powwow, ballet, modern dance, circus arts, film and theater.
The performers, which includes FLC students, “gather as individual artists to create experimental yet elemental dances that reflect their rich cultural heritage and to explore identity as contemporary Native peoples,” according to a news release. “SEED” is said to be a creative process that includes everything from story telling and seed exchanges to outdoor “land dance,” potlucks and flash mobs.
Since 2004, the group has performed throughout the world. It was recognized as “One of the Top 25 Dance Companies to Watch” by Dance Magazine and was the first indigenous contemporary dance ensemble to be awarded the prestigious National Dance Project grant to support the development of its programs. In 2010, the group was honored with an “Expressive Arts” award from the National Museum of the American Indian.
Wrote ExploreDance.com, “The performances of Dancing Earth ... were exemplary and affecting. Audiences were treated to a new experience yet the message was poignant, real and familiar somehow.”
