Wet your whistle on the Durango Brew Train

What: The first ever Durango Brew Train
When: Sat., May 24, 10 a.m. - 4:10 p.m.
Where: Durango to ‘Ah, Wilderess Dude, Ranch’

If your idea of carbo-loading this weekend entails delicious hand-crafted local brews, then hop aboard the 2014 Durango Brew Train. Sure, you may not get the glory of boasting that you beat the train to Silverton, but at least you can say you made it part of the way.

The newest offering in the D&SNG specialty train line-up, the Brew Train will feature beer from all five of Durango’s microbreweries. Local brewmasters also will be on hand to answer questions, discuss brewing nuances or simply raise a glass.

Once aboard, riders can wet their whistles with light samplings from the five breweries. Then it will be full steam ahead as the train makes a two-hour pit stop at the historic former “Ah! Wilderness Dude, Ranch.” There, a full-on brew fest awaits, complete with beer tents, sampling stations, scrumptious hors d’ouevres, live music from The Badly Bent and extreme lawn games. And for the true beer nerd, each brewery will regale participants in its history and brewing process. When the kegs run dry, the train will head back to town.

The train boards in Durango at 9:45 a.m., but if that’s too early for some hair of the dog, participants can meet up with the Brew Train at Rockwood at 11:15 a.m. (train departs sharply at 11:25.)

Fares run the gamut from $149 for the “Presidential” treatment to $99 for “Standard Class” and include all the beer needed to make your carbo-loading a success. And while that does not include a medal, you will still feel like a winner knowing a portion of proceeds goes to the United Way of Southwest Colorado.

To book your seat on the Brew Train, call 888-872-4607 or go to www.durangotrain.com.
