Fayhee and Maria’s team up for book signing
What: Adoptathon and book signing for Colorado Mountain Dogs by M. John Fayhee (former editor of the Mountain Gazette)
When: Sun., June 29, 1-3 p.m.
Where: Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave.
Maria’s Bookshop is going to the dogs this Sunday as author M. John Fayhee stops in to promote his latest book and help find new homes for some deserving local orphan dogs.
Fayhee, known for his stint as editor and “ressurector” of the Mountain Gazette from 2000-12, will be in town promoting his latest book, Colorado Mountain Dogs. The book, which was culled from more than 2,500 photos sent to the Gazette over the years for its annual dog issue, includes 150 photos accompanied by stories, photography tips, dog names and more.
“I thought it would be an easy thing to do, whip it out in a few weeks – that’s not how it turned out,” Fayhee, who recently relocated from Summit County to New Mexico, told the Summit Daily. “Everybody thinks their photo of their dog is the best in the world.”
After trimming out-of-state submissions and ones that were missing contact information, it became more clear cut. “I really wanted to make sure that I got a diverse quantity of photos,” he told the Daily. “Big dogs and small dogs, mutts and huskies and Labs ... I wanted to get a diverse array of dogs, activities – dogs in water, dogs in snow, dogs hiking.”
The end result is a dog’s-eye-view of the backcountry, ski slopes and resort towns of Colorado. “There is no luckier dog than one that is frolicking in the Colorado high country,” posits Fayhee. “Whether skiing, snowshoeing, hiking or mountain biking, dogs in the Colorado mountains are the happiest creatures on the planet.”
Colorado Mountain Dogs captures the joy and rapture of canines and their human companions as they frolic on trails, camps and creeks, from the San Juans to the Front Range to Steamboat Springs.
During the event, Fayhee – a shelter pet owner himself – will also present a humorous slide show. The La Plata County Humane Society will be on hand with shelter dogs available for adoption, and Zuke’s will provide free treats. In addition, Maria’s will donate 10 percent of proceeds from sales of Colorado Mountain Dogs to the La Plata County Humane Society.
Attendees are asked to leave their dogs at home out of respect for the shelter dogs. For more info., go to www.mariasbookshop.com.
