Paradox Sports reaches out to people with disabilities
Both Pete Davis and Craig DiMartino climbed El Cap as ambassadors for Paradox Sports, a nonprofit organization based out of Boulder with a mission of improving the lives of people with physical disabilities. And, since their historic 2012 ascent, the two have increased their involvement acting as athletes, instructors and ambassadors for Paradox, traveling to universities and events to teach amputee clinics and provide information and support to disabled athletes.
“If you just lost your leg and want to climb again, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” Davis said, commenting on the feeling he had as a disabled kid that he was the only amputee climber.
Davis just wrapped up a number of amputee clinics at the Telluride No Barriers Festival, and is preparing for the next all-disabled ascent of El Cap, a 9/11 memorial climb of wounded veterans sponsored and supported by Paradox.
“Our approach to people through Paradox is, ‘let us be your bridge to this new world. It isn’t bad, and it can be amazing,'” DiMartino said. “We’re there to help demystify the process by removing the fear and unknown.”
