FLC history legend Duane Smith hangs it up

What: A final lecture from Duane Smith
Where: Community Concert Hall, Fort Lewis College
When: Thurs., April 24, 7 p.m.

Duane Smith is about to leave the building. This year, the beloved Fort Lewis College history professor will officially retire from academia. But before he leaves those hallowed halls, Smith will deliver one final lecture at 7 p.m., Thurs., April 24, at the Community Concert Hall.

Perhaps the greatest expert on FLC and local history, Smith’s “Last Lecture” will feature stories and insights from nearly 50 years of teaching at FLC, along with local anecdotes, life lessons, musings and advice. Expect it all to be delivered in his trademark entertaining and engaging demeanor.

An educational institution unto himself, Smith first came to FLC in 1964 as an assistant professor in the History Department. Since then, he has become one of FLC’s most respected professors and has touched many lives. Among his many honors is a 1990 Council for Advancement and Support of Education Colorado Professor of the Year award.

Outside the classroom, Smith is an avid sports fan – his undying love for the Skyhawks and the Chicago Cubs is well known. He and his wife, Gay, can often be found in the stands at Skyhawk games where Smith has been known – to put it delicately –loudly share his views.

Tickets for Smith’s Last Lecture are sold out. Fortunately, for those who wan to to catch the action, he will be streamed live at www.fortlewis.edu/live-stream.
