‘Independence’ takes the stage at DAC
What:  Merely Players’ production of Lee Blessing’s “Independence”

Durango’s Merely Players premieres playwright Lee Blessing’s touching adult drama “Independence” at 7:30 p.m. Fri., March 15, at the Durango Arts Center, 802 E. 2nd Ave.

Starring local actresses Maureen May, Theresa Carson, Alvse Neubert and Hattie Miller as a mother and her three daughters, “Independence” is an adult drama depicting each character’s individual and unique response to family issues. While they search for balance between independence and dependence and face the challenges of being together, again and again they learn that, “There’s no place like home!”

The show also runs March 16 and 21-23 with evening and matinee times.

  The Banff is back for encore at the Smiley

The Banff is back! The Banff Mountain Film Festival returns to Durango at 7 p.m. Sat., March 16, at the Smiley Building Theatre, 1309 E. 3rd Ave.

The event, benefitting the San Juan Citizens Alliance and Rocky Mountain Wild, showcases a collection of short films and documentaries from the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.

Every year, the original Banff Festival in Canada receives more than 300 submissions from around the world, and only 60 make the cut. This year 13 adventure and environmentally focused films from that list have been chosen for the Durango screening, including “Industrial Revolutions,” “Crossing the Ice”, “Highway Wilding” and “The Gimp Monkeys.”

  Local musicians ‘Bach out’ at St. Mark’s

Dozens of musicians come together for the 6th annual Durango Bach Festival, which opens with a student recital at 2 p.m. Sun., March 17, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 E. 3rd Ave.

The event, presented by 3rd Avenue Arts, runs from March 17-23 and features eight performances, several talks, lunches and artist receptions. Bach’s Lunch, one of the festival events, celebrates a variety of music from composer Johann Sebastian Bach and features many different instruments during a half-hour recital. It runs daily from March 18-22.

Timothy Smith, a Bach expert from Northern Arizona University, gives a pre-concert talk Wed., March 20, ahead of the 7 p.m. concert, as well as three other talks during the festival.

The week concludes with a Festival Finale at 7 p.m., Sat., March 23, featuring a violin concerto with Nathan Lambert; Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with Lambert, trumpeter Mick Hesse, flutist Rochelle Mann, oboist Danielle Menapace and the Bach Festival Chamber Orchestra; and, a two-keyboard concerto with Linda Mack Berven and C. Scott Hagler.
