Jay and Silent Bob share life and laughter
What: “Jay and Silent Bob Get Old”
Where: Community Concert Hall
When: Thurs., Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes jump from the screen to the stage with their unique “Jay and Silent Bob Get Old” stage show at 7 p.m. Thurs., Jan. 31, at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.

Mewes burst onto the screen in 1994 playing the grass-smoking, fast-talking, foul-mouthed and over-sexed – but very likeable – Jay in Kevin Smith’s classic indie comedy “Clerks.” The off-beat and philosophical characters of Jay and Silent Bob, created by Mewes and Smith, were reprised in additional films directed by Smith, including “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.”

The “Get Old” stage show was originally launched by Smith as a podcast recorded live in front of an audience as a weekly “intervention” for Mewes, who is now clean and sober. The podcasts proved widely popular and the stage show followed.

Smith and Mewes have performed more than 100 “Get Old” shows across the country. Although no two performances are alike, typically Smith watches quietly on stage as his close friend Mewes pours out his stories, even encouraging the more alarming ones and insisting the audience heed them as cautionary lessons. As the duo notes, “Every saga has a middle age, and this is what happens when Jay and Silent Bob get old.”
For information about the show, which is not recommended for children, call 247-7657 or visit www.durangoconcerts.com.

Four Corners Commission returns to The DAC
http://www.mstband.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/MST-2012-07-16-%C2%A9Tobin-Voggesser_-7.jpgWhat: DAC’s annual juried art show
Where: Durango Arts Center
When: through Feb. 2

One of the Art Center’s biggest annual shows has returned, reflecting the uniqueness of life, land, and the diverse heritage of the Four Corners region. The show, which features paintings by more than 50 artists from throughout the Southwest, is on display in the Barbara Conrad Gallery through Sat., Feb. 2. This year’s show was juried by Patrice Brown and Cindy McNealy, both from San Juan College in Farmington.

Brown, an award-winning artist, has been a resident of northern New Mexico since 2000. Her work is represented in corporate and private collections throughout the U.S. She has been employed as an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts, Gallery Director and has been a board member with numerous nonprofit arts organizations. She also worked as the manager of San Juan College’s Art Gallery for several years.

McNealy, a working potter and painter since the early 1990s, is the Ceramic Department Chair at San Juan College. As the current manager at San Juan College’s Art Gallery, she continues to expand and develop the school’s permanent art collection, as well as design and institute an innovative exhibits schedule.

For this year’s “Best of Show,” the two jurors chose local artist Rebecca Koeppen for her pastel, “The San Juans in Winter.” Second place went to Jan Heyl, “Awaiting the Harvest,” pastel; and third place honors were awarded to Ron Martin for his photograph, “Winter Stillness on the Animas.”
