The 5th annual Homegrown Food Retreat returns to Fort Lewis College starting at 7 p.m., Fri., Feb. 22, in the Student Union Ballroom.
The event, hosted by the Growing Partners of Southwest Colorado, brings together food producers, buyers and consumers to examine access to locally produced food and how it’s distributed. Keynote speaker Steve Warshawer, Enterprise Development Manager for La Montanita’s Cooperative Distribution Center, based in Albuquerque, shares local food distribution models throughout the Four Corners during his opening address on Friday night.
The workshops get under way at 8 a.m. Sat., Feb. 23, and continue until 3:30 p.m. They’ll take a deeper look into the producer, consumer and buyer influences and interests in food access and distribution in La Plata County and beyond.

The inventive Latin jazz ensemble Dave Samuels and The Caribbean Jazz Project come to Durango at 7 p.m. Wed., Feb. 27, at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College.
The Caribbean Jazz Project, founded by Samuels in 1993, has set a new standard in original, improvised music based on the rich musical traditions of the Caribbean. The ensemble earned Grammy nominations, including a win for Best Latin Jazz Recording. The current line-up features Samuels (vibes and marimba), Lincoln Goines (bass), Oscar Feldman (sax), Vince Cherico (drums) and Arturo Stable (percussion).
The top mallet player of his generation, Samuels is recognized for a fresh new sound and creative approach to both the vibraphone and marimba. A former member of Spyro Gyra, Samuels, demonstrated his versatility and gained worldwide recognition by performing with a broad range of artists.
Samuels will also participate in the FLC Jazz Festival on Feb. 28, which features up to 18 jazz bands throughout the day and an evening concert with Samuels, the FLC Jazz Ensemble and the top scoring High School Jazz Ensemble from the Jazz Fest.
