Thin Mints and self-empowerment
To the editor,
It’s Girl Scout cookie time again! Cookie sales are very important for Girl Scouts, but our troop wants you to know that we do more than just sell cookies. We use the money that we raise to do fun things like having a float in the Snowdown Parade, going rappelling at Cascade Creek, and riding the D&SNG train. And since we’re all interested in learning how to rock climb, we decided to start having our troop meetings at the Rock Lounge! Selling cookies has helped us learn how to set goals, handle money, run a business and pay for all of the fun activities that we do. Thanks for buying cookies and supporting your local Girl Scout troops!

The heart of winter
Hi Tele,
One should be throwing down teles and walking on a snowy road or skiing up and down a mountain. This is winter. Embrace it and enjoy it. I love sitting 2 feet from my wood burner, feeling that awesome heat of wood I collected all fall. It’s primal, my hands freeze like anyone. And I know what it is like to feel the nip, my old house and my truck are weak, I layer up and still enjoy the freeze. Thumbs up from me.

Cabinet picks weaken security
To the editor,
President Obama’s recent picks for secretary of defense, Chuck Hagel, and secretary of state, John
Kerry, call into question Obama’s judgment and wisdom and his ability to lead this country.
To the editor,
President Obama’s recent picks for secretary of defense, Chuck Hagel, and secretary of state, John
Kerry, call into question Obama’s judgment and wisdom and his ability to lead this country.
Chuck Hagel opposed the successful troop surge in Iraq, and he wants to prematurely pull troops out of Afghanistan. He believes in placating Communist Cuba and wants to negotiate with the terrorist organizations 4 Hamas and Hezbollah. Hagel is committed to negotiating with Iran on its nuclear development program. He wants to make dramatic cuts to our military, which will weaken our national security posture. Hagel will be in lockstep with Obama and will continue the policies of appeasement.
John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran with medals that Swift Boat commanders stated he did not deserve, will march to Obama’s tune of appeasement. Kerry, in Congressional hearings, turned on his fellow Vietnam War veterans. He could be another apologist for the Obama administration.
As a former Navy enlisted man and officer, I question the ability of the Obama/Hagel/Kerry threesome to lead this country from a position of strength in the world. I do not have confidence in the capabilities of these key individuals to promote our national security.

Literally a grassroots effort
To the editor,
I have been working with a committed group of people to shift the paradigm of how we in the local community relate to nature. But rather than another war on one more thing – in this case sweet dandelions among other beneficial, medicinal plants and beings – we are looking at how we can live more harmoniously with our Dear Mother Earth.

As many people know, this past year we were able to bring a resolution to the table with Durango’s City Council and Parks and Rec Department that will shift our parks management to an from a conventional program to an organic one. This will reduce (and eventually eliminate) the need for the herbicides and chemical fertilizers that are being used on public parks currently.
Our city hired a consultant who recently presented his recommendations for this program. The city needs to purchase some equipment to implement the program. It is a substantial initial investment for the city, which in the long run will pay off for all of us – humans, insects, soil, water, community.
The city has asked us for support in finding the funds to make this program possible. Please click on the following Website to donate and support our regional and global ecosystem: http://gogetfunding.com/project/organic-parks-durango
Thank you for supporting this project!

Fallen comrade lived 100 percent
To the editor,
Durango has suffered the loss of a fellow comrade. Peter Carver died in an avalanche on Saturday in Silverton, and it’s time for us to shed our hearts to the families and loved ones connected to Peter, as well as his other two mates, Duncan Rothwell and Nate Klema, who survived this unfortunate experience.

I give thanks of the fond memories I shared with Peter on top of mountain peaks, shredding slopes, dancing at shows, and lost in genuine conversation. His presence touched Durango and will live on forever in our hearts and memories. He lived 100 percent and died doing what he loved. It saddens me that his friends were the ones to witness his end, however what two of the finest friends to share your last moments with. My heart goes out to you, Duncan, Nate and family. Farewell, Peter!

Descent
Drowning my Dramamine,
I realize that
As a passenger, I am hopelessly imprisoned;
An organic suspension of cells
Under the vast firmament.
Thrusting through the belly of vapors
The Icarian machine
Slopes and knifes through blinding white.
A wing dips westerly,
The turbines totter,
Lights sigh,
Tonal chimes echo,
The bounce- the dip,
The dip-the bounce
And then, abruptly…
An inaudible reassurance
Crackles from the captain’s closet,
Multiplying growing anxieties!
Cold sweat, a dizziness,
Rumbling stomach,
Clenched jaw,
Eyes closed,
Bumping downward…
Suddenly… the horrific falling upward!
White knuckle time,
Frozen,
I Whisper over and over,
The private plea,
That ingressive prayer,
Beseeching…
Footfall and home!
