Snowboarder’s comeback story hits big screen

What:  “The Crash Reel,” the true story of Olympic hopeful Kevin Pearce
Where: Animas City Theatre
When: Fri., Dec. 13, 4 and 6:30 p.m.
Witness the harrowing story of snowboarding superstar Kevin Pearce, whose life changed forever when he suffered a traumatic brain injury on New Year’s Eve 2009, only 49 days before the 2010 Winter Olympics. Pearce's story is told in “The Crash Reel” showing at 4 and 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at the Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive.
Directed by two-time Oscar-nominated director Lucy Walker and written by Pedro Kos and Lucy Walker, the documentary showcases the epic rivalry between half-pipe snowboarding legends Pearce and Shaun White. With the two practicing more breathtaking and dangerous tricks ahead of the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010, everything suddenly changes after a horrific crash leaves Pearce fighting for his life.
As he recovers, he’s only focused on returning to the pipe and the sport, something that now gives his family and doctors pause. The film features Pearce and White, as well as Mason Aquirre, Danny Davis, Scotty Lago, Jack Mitrani and Luke Mitrani.

Classic ballet returns to Concert Hall

What:  "The Nutcracker" ballet

When: Fri., Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.
Usher in the holiday season with the return of “The Nutcracker” to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College with opening night at 7 p.m. Fri., Dec. 13. Nearly 50 local dancers join the professionals from the State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara for this annual magical performance. Based on the book The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, by E.T.A. Hoffman, the story follows a young girl, Clara, whose godfather, a skilled clock and toy maker, gives her a toy nutcracker at a holiday party. She then dreams of the toy coming alive and escorting her on a journey to a magical world, where a cast of unusual characters entertains her through dance.
