Ear to the ground:

To deal with the seasonal inundation of homeless litters, the La Plata County Humane Society will be hosting a “Little Paws Baby Shower” on Sat., April 13, for prospective kitty and pup foster families.
With limited resources to care for the tiny furballs, the Humane Society depends on foster families to provide a safe, warm and loving environment for the wee ones until they are 8 to 10 weeks old and can be returned to the shelter to be adopted to their “forever homes.”
During their stay with their foster families, animals may need to return to the shelter for vaccinations, check-ups or medical treatments. At the end of the foster period, they are returned to the Humane Society to be considered for adoption.
“I feel like I am being a big part of the solution,” longtime foster parent Charlie Gremmels said. “Phase one is the Humane Society, and with me being phase two, it gets them ready for adoption at phase three. I love them all and I wish I could keep them all. But I have realized I have the ability to help more than I can keep.”
Interested fosters can stop by Saturday to meet other foster parents as well as their current young charges. In addition to seeking new foster families, the Humane Society will also be holding a “baby shower” for the puppies and kitties, for much needed supplies. For more info, or a list of needed “shower gifts,” go to the LPCHS website: www.lpchumanesociety.org.
The rum distillery, which produces rum in Crested butte but maintains its Silverton “tasting room,” was named 2013 Craft Distiller of the Year at the American Distilling Institute’s annual conference, held last week in Denver.
The conference boasted record-breaking attendance of more than 900 people representing 200-plus American distilleries.
This award, called the “Bubble Cap Award,” is presented to one U.S. distilling company that most exemplifies the values of the Institute and exhibits excellence in process, products and potential growth.
“This award was a great honor for us because it was conferred among our peers in the industry,” Montanya Distillers President Karen Hoskin said.
Montanya’s Oro Rum also received a silver medal at the conference, the highest medal awarded in its category.

Rainy with a chance of kittens
Once again, it’s raining cats and dogs in La Plata County – or puppies and kitties to be exact.
