Old Fort Centennial Celebration set for Sunday
What: The continued observance of Fort Lewis College’s 100th anniversary
Where: The Old Fort campus in Hesperus
When: Sun., July 3 from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Fort Lewis College continues to look back on 100 years this week. The Old Fort Centennial Celebration is set for July 3 as Durango commemorates a century of higher education.

The festivities are open to the public and run from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Old Fort Lewis campus in Hesperus. All are invited to take part in archaeological and agricultural tours of the Old Fort, as well as hayrides, a petting zoo and games for the kids. Guests can also browse a farmers market for produce grown at the Old Fort.

The Centennial has been running throughout the year and marks the establishment of the “agricultural and mechanic arts high school” in 1911. In the century since then, Fort Lewis has undergone constant evolution – from high school, to teaching school, to A&M college, to the four-year public liberal arts college we know today – as it has adapted with the changing needs and demands of the times.

For more information on Fort Lewis College’s first century as a public educational institution, visit www.fortlewis.edu/centennial.
